he is fit to be treated as a KING rather than a Knight. Though he is a mature canine, he still can run with the big dogs and keep pace with other animals. Recently, he has lived a good life in the country chasing squirrels and napping with his new companion, Gertie. Because he likes chasing squirrels, he will need a yard with a fence that's at least four feet high. He enjoys a good rub anywhere on his body and responds with a smile and thump, thump, thump of his hind legs against his lower abdomen. Sir Knight has prey drive so a home without cats would be best. He has not been around small children, but due to his size, older children would be most appropriate. It is thought that he might have been a working dog at some point as he is well behaved and listens and reacts quickly to commands. He is not aggressive in nature but stands and barks in defense of his current owner and roommates when approached by humans and other animals. Otherwise, he enjoys a walk in the woods, down the street, or just hanging out on the porch. He especially loves, and barks to the cool wind in his hair on rides to pick up food or to see other human family. There is nothing like watching him bark at dogs as we pull up next to other dogs in cars at the stop light! So I guess he can be deemed a social butterfly of the dog degree. When mowing grass with a riding mower, he loves to run alongside. On days when baths are required, he enjoys a good bath and will take it lying down.He is on a diet of salmon and potato to keep his figure in shape. While he is housebroken and crate trained, he can be trusted on free roam because he does not chew or destroy anything around the house. He loves a good dog bed but takes his short naps usually on the kitchen floor where it is cooler or on the back porch as he enjoys that cool breeze against his dark fur. If walking him, be prepared for him to take the lead. Once down the stairs and in the yard, he is almost always out front with a new route in mind to explore. He enjoys rubbing noses with other dogs but mostly likes a kingly atmosphere where his needs are met and others just sit and admire his handsomeness. For all these reasons, he may be King Arthur’s reincarnation exhibiting such traits as: nobility, bravery, and adherence to chivalry, but he also exhibits flaws such as naiveté, stubbornness, and a capacity for pride. He is portrayed as a heroic and idealized leader, devoted to his kingdom's well-being and justice, yet he can be blind to the intrigues around him and often relies on the wisdom and strength of his knights. He will make any future owner proud to be his subject. If you're interested in giving Sir Knight his forever home, reach out to your adoption coordinator. If you do not yet have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at .freedomgermanshepherdrescue. Sir Knight is being fostered outside of Charleston, SC.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
