was always reactive when she would get startled or someone new would walk in. At about 9 months of age I started her on medication from the vet. Fluoxetine, Clonidine, and gabapentin. This medication helps as long as you make sure to give her doses on schedule. Kady walks on a leash well, I used a slip collar for awhile to get her to stop pulling. She She is used to a couple walks a day. She eats some human food, but otherwise Purina One, Basic Instinc beef & venison. She is VERY picky. She loves her bones and toys. But she is not a play catch type of dog, it doesn't interest her. She likes human interaction most of the time. She is a very needy dog. Always wants your attention or to be near you. She has had an accidental pee or poop before, but only on a rare occasion. She sleeps in bed with me and likes to cuddle. She went to sitters with dogs and men and became acquainted very quickly, as a matter a fact she did better when a dog was there when not. She also has gone to PUPTOWN daycare for several months now because of the traveling I have had to do for my dad. She has really good reports and has made a huge difference since going there. She has been going to the same Vet, New Hope Animal Hospital since I moved here, and she is all up to date on all of her shots as well she is spayed. We are moving my dad here on the 18th of October and I need to find her a home by then, even a temporary home. She does not do well with kids as they are very active and make her very nervous, I fear she would growl and risk biting. My dad has dementia and the only way to bring him home is to bring him to my house. He is allergic to dogs and Kady would not do well with him, tripping and falling being one of the issues, as well he doesn't tolerate the barking. Please advise. She has been with me since birth and she is on medications because she has anxiety and fearfulness. I have small grandkids and I run my business out of the home now and she scares people because she is aggressive. I had spent thousands of dollars this year trying to get her trained, but I can't. I need to surrender her as soon as possible as I have my elder father with dimentia moving in with me in the next two weeks. I have tried getting her adopted and have had no luck. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
