oth potty and crate trained and know basic commands. I'm still working on not jumping on the ones I love and the kitchen counters, though, and because I am still in my puppy era, I am still learning not to nip. I enjoy my toys, bones and bully sticks and my bed. I like to play for hours, and I am very food and treat driven. I am good with the littles (5 year old humans) that come over but must be supervised very closely with them because I do get excited and may accidentally knock them over. Not sure how I would do with cats or small dogs since I like to chase squirrels and rabbits. I love playing with my furry friend next door. He is a Golden Retriever and is about my size. Although we have a fence between us, we run up and down the fence and bark and play and have a good ole time. I ring the bell on the back door when I want to go outside. I sleep in my crate all night and go in my crate when my family is not home. I am very vocal when I see things out the window, hear things or need or want something. We learned early on that anything with chicken products does not agree with my tummy, so my foster mom does not buy food or treats with chicken in them. I am very cautious with new people but will warm up once I see they are good. I am with my foster mom all day since she works from home, so I am looking for a family that is home most of the day or another furry friend that is my size to have around to play with after we are introduced slowly. The friend will probably need to put me in my place as I tend to try to be the dominant one I really enjoy going for walks but still working on my leash manners - there is just so much to explore! I cannot be trusted off leash because I like to run off. I also like to chase my foster Dad on the riding lawn mower and bark at him. I require a large fenced in yard that is at least 5 feet tall. I enjoy playing in water and enjoy my little doggie pool, walks in the park, car rides, tennis balls, frisbees, just being outdoors with my people, playing with my neighbor dog friend, or inside playing or chewing on my bones. I am very energetic and need a family that would like to play with me and include me. I would thrive in a good, solid, structured home with continued daily training and a schedule. I am a very busy fun-loving boy who enjoys life to the fullest and I want to enjoy it with a family that loves me as much as I love them. If you think you can offer me my forever home, contact your adoption coordinator. If you do not yet have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at .freedomgermanshepherdrescue. I am being fostered outside of Greensboro, NC.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
