e from a neglectful home where he received little care or socialization and was likely abandoned. He arrived fearful and matted, but has made a remarkable transformation in his foster home. Hugo is being fostered by Tammy and Izzie, alongside their two dogs and two cats. He integrated easily with the dogs and has recently started engaging in play. He’s not a natural with cats; he’ll sometimes bark or chase. There have been no serious dustups, but he’ll do best in a home without cats. Thanks to Tammy & Izzie’s commitment, we’ve watched Hugo evolve from a scared, nippy boy into a total snuggle bug once he trusts his people. He’s a mellow, affectionate buy who loves cuddles and downtime, with a few backyard zoomies mixed in. On walks, he’s more active and will pull a bit at first, but settles down once he’s into the rhythm. Tammy shared this update: “You can’t describe Hugo’s personality without using the word cute. He’s a little package of cuteness! When he snuggles with us, he often flips onto his back for belly rubs, rubbing back and forth in pure joy. Hugo loves to be held, cuddled next to us, and follow us everywhere - he’s definitely a velcro dog. Early on, when we were busy, he’d wander around looking for something to do, like a bored kid. Now he’s learned to relax in the elevated beds when we’re occupied — huge progress! He’s also discovered toys and is learning to self-entertain, carrying them around until he finds the perfect spot to lie down and chew. Hugo is almost fully house-trained and responds well to a consistent schedule. He goes outside to do his business and will sometimes let us know when he wants to go out. He’s also accepted the crate, and we crate him when we leave during the day. Once we’re home, he has free roam, but we’ve been keeping him on a loose leash indoors to help with training and managing him around the cats.” ******** Ideal Home: Hugo would thrive with a single owner or a couple with a flexible schedule. He’d do fine as an only dog or with one other mellow companion. He can be a little mouthy (never hard or hurtful) and would be best with older kids. He sometimes startles at sudden movements or being picked up, so a calm, patient home that gives him verbal cues before handling will help him continue to blossom. Hugo will be coming to the DC metro area in early November. Apply today to welcome him home! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
