ow and weighs around 50 lbs. She is so stunning and her markings are so unique! Patches is in one of our loving foster homes and she is settling in very well. She is a timid girl until she knows you and takes time to warm up. Her shyness is just that - she has no defensive behaviors and is not aggressive in any way. She loves her foster mom and dad and their 8 year old son. She also loves her furry foster brother - a large black lab. She is still learning to love the cat in the home - she was rather terrified of him but there is no aggression towards the cat. From her foster mom: Patches plays outside in the yard, goes for short walks, and plays with the resident dog A LOT. She loves stuffed toys and hard chews but doesn't seem to understand what rope toys are for. Solid dog treats take her some time to eat, but she loves cheese, peanut butter, and chicken. She is very happy curled up in the papasan chair in our living room, and just wants to be close to her humans She is initially cautious in new settings or with new people, but if she's given time to warm up she does so fairly well. She warms up faster to new people in our home than she does when we're in a new environment. She was terrified of our cat initially but is getting more confident and is around the cat more. She LOVES other dogs and plays very well with them but isn't always quick to take cues from dogs that are tired of playing. Patches is potty trained, she responds to her name, and comes when called. Training has really been focused on leash work and getting her comfortable with leashes and harness. She is getting used to being home alone for a few hours at a time and does ok with that. She can get a little stressed if she is alone for longer periods of time. Patches will likely do best in a home with another dog, to help her build confidence. Overall, Patches is a wonderful girl. With patience, she will be your best friend. She is vaccinated, spayed and chipped. Her adoption fee is $450 We cover the medical to prepare the pet for adoption and the adopt donations go directly to cover those costs and range from $295-$495. Thank you for stepping up to save a life! To expedite to meet with this dog, please go to our site at .savinggreatanimals and fill out an application. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
