NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Rougaro Best Guess for Breed: German shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 1 year as of October 2025 SEX: male Approximate Weight: 50 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: DC area foster home. Rougaro is Looking For: This young boy is looking for his own humans to lavish all that love and affection upon them. German Shepherds get deeply attached to their people - they're known as Velcro dogs for a reason. Rougaro may be a mix but he's certainly got that GSD in him and knows that having his own people, being safe and loved and under his own roof is the most important thing. He's ready to be by your side on all your adventures, offering loyal companionship for all his days. What do you say? Does Rougaro start his new chapter with you? What My Foster Says About Me: Rougaro is a fantastic puppy. Although he’s already one year old and we've had him for only a few days, he has definitely had a warm and loving upbringing to this point. He’s eager to learn and will do great with training, and at being your velcro. He is very calm and gentle, and a great house guest - he even designated his own area in the backyard for his business and uses the rest to play and explore. While he loves to run and play, he can quickly calm down and be docile. He is well-behaved in the house (no resident animals but kids and activity), car, dog park, walks, and meeting people/dogs. He has zero aggression, and we have yet to hear him bark – even when prodded with the vacuum, mower/blower, or when the neighboring dogs are on the other side of the fence. He loves going on walks, is excellent on the leash, either gently saying hi to people and dogs or observing them and moving on. Take too long stopping to talk to a friend on a walk, and he’s lying at your feet waiting patiently. He has met toddlers and up, and gives everyone the same warm greeting, possibly accompanied by a lick. We haven’t cat-tested him yet, and he shows no signs of aggression toward squirrels, birds, or food. He does love his treats, which are already helping with the training we have begun. He is good with the crate, but spends most of his days lying around/sleeping in his expen area, with or without it being closed. He sleeps through the night and waits patiently for us to let him out. His favorite is for us to get down on the floor with him and snuggle while he gets in his yawns and stretches to wake up slowly, which happens often. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
