can meet some of our dogs, please see HERE Age: 10 months (as of 10/27/25) Weight: 9 lbs. (as of 10/8/25) Location: RI This dog has been spayed/neutered, is up to date on shots, on heartworm preventative and is microchipped. Meet cute little Chenille! Weighing in at 9 pounds, we think this sweet smiley girl is about 10 months old and probably a Shih Tzu/Yorkie mix. She has been doing great in her active foster home the last couple of months, living with two adults, a toddler, and four other small dogs. Chenille is playful and energetic -- she loves her toys, chasing other pups, and riding in the car. She is a perfect little buddy to bring along for a ride! She's living in a suburban neighborhood right now and likes going for walks. Her neighborhood can be a little busy at times with cars and foot traffic, but she seems to be okay with that! She can be a bit vocal and will bark at passersby, but she's just curious and happy to say hi. She's very friendly and is a great little snuggle bug -- definitely a lovable lap dog! Chenille has been doing a good job at her house training and crate training so far, but will still need a little help to get her to the finish line. She had been surrendered by a previous owner who could no longer care for her. She does go outside to potty, but sometimes will go in the house because in her first home, she was used to having puppy pads in her kennel. Her foster has been working on this with her to get her into a different routine. We also think going to some puppy classes with her new family will be really helpful as she works on her training. After all, she's still a young pup and has lots to learn! It'll be a great opportunity to bond and start fresh with these new habits together. Have you fallen in love with Chenille's sweet smile? Fill out an application today! An adoption donation is required for each adoption; please see HERE for more information about this. To apply for this dog, fill out an adoption application on our website: Adoption Application - SOS Animal Rescue League in Rhode Island (sosarl) **Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
