ryday that she deserves her own human and a safe life. She is also telling me she had that at one time. What we do know is that her human passed away. After her human passed away, she was put outside & fed sporadically. So what do you think happened to Speckles, an unspayed female thrown outside to fend for herself? Yep, barely a year old herself & she finds herself pregnant. Well, family members wanted no part of taking care of puppies so they drop her off at the closest overcrowded shelter. So here’s poor Speckles, in a strange loud, scary place just wanting to find a safe spot to have her puppies. ACDRA to the rescue! They pulled her and placed her with me to foster. She looked horrible when she came to me. So thin & scared. Another new strange place, new people & other dogs. Soon she delivered ten (yes, as in 10) healthy puppies. What a good Momma! Well fast forward, puppies have been weaned, another traumatic time for a Momma. Then what do we do to her? We take her to the vet & have her spayed! Another scary, uncomfortable venture for her to overcome! Well guess what? She did overcome & is just getting better every day! She feels good. She’s happy! She loves playing with balls! Speckles has glowed up! She looks so much better & is much happier but she has one more hurdle to leap. Once again she is looking for her home. Her forever home. Her forever home with her very own person. Speckles seems to be a good candidate for dog sports. She is young & very easy to train. She loves balls and frisbees! I can see her excelling in disc dog and loving every minute. She so much fun to play with in the yard because she loves chasing balls. So that’s her story. Speckles is just over a year old, spayed and current on all vaccines. She is also on flea & tick prevention and heartworm prevention. To be safe I’m going to suggest she be the only dog in the home. Although she is showing signs she wants to play with my dogs, when she first came to me she was in Momma Bear mode & wanted nothing to do with other dogs hanging around! Not only that, she just deserves to be someone’s one & only where she will get lots of love & attention! She is fostered thru ACDRA in Salem Ohio. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
