ull of life. This lovable goofball is all puppy — playful, cuddly, and always ready for fun. He’s been settling in beautifully with his foster family and is now ready to find an active home that can keep up with his enthusiasm and help him grow into the great dog he’s meant to be. Wilbur is housetrained and learning his basic manners. He knows “sit,” “come,” and “with me,” and his leash skills are improving with practice. Like most young pups, he’s still working on curbing his jumping when greeting people — he just can’t help being excited to see you! Crate time is a challenge for Wilbur right now. He finds it stressful to be left alone and can cry or try to escape if confined. He’ll need a patient adopter who can help him learn that being alone is okay, using short, positive sessions and gradual confidence-building. Because of this, a work-from-home household or one where he’ll have company most of the time would be ideal. Wilbur is a high-energy guy who loves his walks, hikes, and playtime with other dogs. He enjoys squeaky toys and anything he can chew on (wood is a favorite!). He’s happiest when he has something to do — a dog friend to play with, a yard to explore, or a human to tag along with on adventures. He’ll definitely need plenty of daily exercise and structure to stay happy and out of mischief. He gets along well with people of all ages, including kids, and loves meeting new friends. He plays well with other dogs and would benefit from having a canine buddy. With cats, he’s curious but not aggressive — he’ll sometimes chase out of instinct but means no harm. Wilbur’s personality shines through in everything he does — he’s affectionate, fun-loving, and eager to please. He’s the kind of dog who brings energy and joy wherever he goes. With guidance, consistency, and plenty of love, he’s going to make an incredible lifelong companion. Wilbur will do best in: An active home with lots of daily exercise and mental stimulation A family or individual who’s home most of the time (work from home is great) A home with another playful dog to help him learn and burn energy Someone patient and committed to continuing his training Wilbur is still growing and learning, with all the makings of a wonderful, devoted companion. If you’re looking for a bright, bouncy pup to join your adventures—and you’re ready for the energy that comes with it—Wilbur might just be your guy. Our adoption process begins with our adoption questionnaire: norcalgsprescue/adoption-questionnaire/ (Please note that we adopt primarily within Northern California and our minimum age for kids is 6) If you'd like to see what Wilbur's been up to, check out his posting in the Available Foster Dogs section: norcalgsprescue/available-dogs/. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
