time without proper care. Animal control started helping me, and Mostly Mutts has continued that good care. When I arrived, I was missing quite a bit of fur, had skin that needed help, was a little underweight, and I’m also heartworm positive. The good news is that I’m already improving - my fur and skin are looking better every day, I’ve put on a few pounds, and I’ll be treated for heartworms soon. I’m hoping to be in my forever home before that treatment begins, so I can recover surrounded by love. I also needed bloodwork, which was generously funded by a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization — thank you to them! I’ve been through a lot, but those hard days are behind me now and I dream of a forever home where I can finally be someone’s cherished girl. • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I met other dogs at Mostly Mutts and only liked the bigger ones. I’m vocal and easily excited around dogs, so if you have a larger dog at home already, let’s meet with my trainer! / Cats unknown. / I haven’t met kids yet at Mostly Mutts, so let’s meet and best no toddlers that I may bump over. Also, kids should not walk me due to being startled by loud vehicles and my excitement when seeing other dogs. • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I’m a friendly, affectionate, and super-sweet girl who loves spending time with the wonderful volunteers and I show my appreciation by giving a few kisses. I was pretty scared of baths at first, but I’ve come such a long way! Now that I get my medicated baths twice a week, I’ve learned to relax and trust - and I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. / Energy Level: 4-6. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I'm a student in the Mostly Mutts University training program and look forward to learning a lot with my trainer! Check back soon to see what I've learned. I’m new to walking on a leash, but learning. / I’m getting used to going into and exiting my crate now. It was very scary at first, so there may be an adjustment in my new home, and I may dart out of it. / I’ve been having some accidents on the shelter schedule, so I’ll need my new family to help me finish mastering this. • LIKES/DISLIKES: I love treats and spending time with people - and I’m sure we’ll discover even more of my favorite things as I settle in with my new family! / Loud cars/traffic noise can make me jumpy, and I might try to run off when startled, so keep a good hold of my leash please and let’s find a quieter place to walk that the busy streets around the shelter. I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, good care, exercise, and training. • MEDICAL: I'm current on annual vaccinations, micro-chipped and spayed. I have moderate tartar on my teeth, so my adoptive family should consult with their vet and consider a dental cleaning in the future. Since I wasn't kept on heartworm prevention in my previous home, I'm HW positive. The good news is that I'll be treated for that in early December and Mostly Mutts will cover the cost of that treatment with their vet, so local adoption please. I’m still receiving medicated baths for my skin twice a week and these can be done in my new home. I’m looking for a family that will treasure me and take good care of me! My adoption fee is $299.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
