Akita Dogs For Adoption in Center Township, PA, USA

Dog Breed: Akita (medium coat). Hi, my name is Marley, though some folks affectionately call me Mama. I came to the shelter after a kind family found me and my puppies living under a porch. Life was t

ough, but we were lucky! Someone cared enough to get us help, and that’s when everything started to change. At first, I can be a little shy. I need a bit of time to get to know you, but once I do, I’m as sweet as they come. I absolutely love being petted and will shower you with kisses in return. I’m affectionate, gentle, and just want to be close to someone I trust. I spent some time in a foster home, and my foster mom helped the shelter learn a lot about me. She says I’m loving, intelligent, and full of potential, but I do have a few quirks that someone adopting me should know. I’m what they call an escape artist—I’ve been known to dig or sneak out if left unsupervised. A securely fenced yard and close supervision outside are a must. When I first arrived in foster care, I brought along my seven puppies. Once they were healthy and found their own homes, my foster mom started working with me on crate training and house training. I made great progress and even started getting used to car rides, which used to scare me. I also lived with other dogs in foster care. I did best with the male dogs, especially the ones who let me take the lead. I prefer not to share my food, toys, or water, so I’d do best as the only dog in the home, or possibly with a very easygoing companion and a knowledgeable handler. Now that my puppies have moved on, it’s finally my turn. Because I’m an Akita, it’s important that my future family understands my breed. We are intelligent, strong-willed dogs from the working group. We’re fiercely loyal, naturally protective, and tend to be reserved around strangers. We can be dominant and independent, and we often have a high prey drive, so we do best in experienced, adult-only homes with confident owners who understand our needs. That said, with the right person, I will be your best friend- devoted, calm, and deeply affectionate. I’m ready to leave behind my rough start and begin a new life full of love, structure, and companionship. If you think we might be a match, I’d love to meet you. If this dog has been successful in our play groups it is not a guarantee that a dog will be social with other dogs in their home or in public settings. Dogs are individuals and have personality conflicts, just like us. Play groups do not guarantee that territorial or resource guarding issues will not surface in the home. While play groups do help us get to know the dog's better, once they are adopted their new environments and new relationships will influence their behavior in ways we cannot predict. The Adoption Fee Includes: - initial canine distemper combination vaccination - first worming or stool check - rabies vaccination (for animals over 3 months of age) - 24 Petwatch microchipping - flea treatment/preventative - spaying or neutering -heartworm testing Adoption fee: $135.00 Per state law, ALL ADOPTERS must purchase a non-refundable 2025 dog license at time of adoption for any canine three months and older. The cost of the license is $9.20. (Senior Citizen or Person with Disability-$7.20) Leash and collar included

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
