a binding contract. To learn more about our adoption process, please visit our Adoption Process page on our website at .rescuecrew. ~Eligiable for our Respect your Elders Program~ Hello! My name is Sharon (spoken just like Ozzy because is there any other way it can be said?) and I am on the search for my retirement home! I’m a senior gal with some special needs so let me tell you about myself to see if you’re the right home for me! I was found as a stray in rough shape and brought to a local impound. They estimated me to be around 12 years old! My nails were so long that they were curled and starting to grow into my pads, my skin was red and irritated with scabs, wounds and hair loss patches, I was thin, and I was having mobility issues. With proper veterinary care and lots of love, I’m in much better shape! I still have mobility issues, and the vet thinks I could have some neuropathy going on which basically effects my nerves. We have found that steroids and pain meds help me so I will likely be on those for the rest of my life! I look a little funny getting around but it’s just my normal! Because my back legs don’t work well, I can’t do any stairs and any walks you want to take with me would have to be with me in a stroller. The really good news is that because I’m an older gal, my happy place is snuggled in bed with my person/people so my limited mobility doesn’t bother me much at all! Foster mom got a heated blanket and oh my goodness… I never want to leave bed! In my ideal world, I would be the only dog in your home to dote on, but I can be tolerant of small, low energy dogs that leave me alone. My foster home has other dogs and in typical chihuahua fashion, I must give them a piece of my mind sometimes! If you want a good laugh, ask my foster mom to show you the photo evidence of these scolding sessions. I am small but I am mighty. Hehe! Again, because I am a chihuahua, I really bond to one or two people and outsiders will likely receive barking, a little growling and some side eye. Maybe they should have named me Karen instead of Sharon! *shrugs* I am who I am. No small children for me either, please! My foster mom is my person in my foster home! My foster dad is alright too but not nearly as cool as her. We are best friends and like I mentioned earlier, snuggled up next to her on my heated blanket is my favorite place in the world! Toss in some ear rubs and it's the best day ever! They put me in a room to eat breakfast and dinner and I immediately let them know that I would like to return to my throne as soon as I’m done. A dog bed on the ground? Blasphemy! Now that I am in my senior years, I’d really prefer not to spend too much time alone. I would much rather be with you as much as possible! My foster parents absolutely adore me. I have brought a lot of smiles, laughs, snuggles and love to their life and they told me that they can’t wait for my forever family to get to cherish those things. I obviously had a tough life before coming into rescue and I’m so glad it’s behind me. I can’t wait to find my retirement home that will love and spoil me. Oh, and maybe get me a heated blanket? Sorry, can’t hurt to mention, right? My mobility issues make me a little more work, but I promise I’m worth it. If you’d like to learn more or meet me, make sure to submit your application! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
