ad too many dogs and needed help. I wasn’t properly socialized before arriving, so I’m still adjusting to life at the shelter and learning that people can be kind and safe. Each day I’m getting a little more comfortable, but I’ll need a patient and understanding family willing to give me lots of time to build trust and feel secure. Please don’t adopt me just because I’m cute - what I truly need is someone who will love me through the very slow, steady process of coming out of my shell. • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I lived with quite a few dogs before coming to Mostly Mutts and came in with a dog who’s already been adopted. I’ve met a few dogs around my size, but since I’m still a bit stressed, I wasn’t too sure about them. With time and the right introduction, I might do well with a gentle, confident dog who can show me the ropes - but we’d definitely need to meet first to see if we’re a good match. / Cats unknown. / I haven’t met or been around kids, so I think older mature and calm-natured kids that will follow the guidelines of giving me lots of time to feel comfortable would be best, let’s meet. • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I’m a very shy soul who didn’t get much socializing before I came to Mostly Mutts, so I need someone patient who will let trust grow at my pace. Please go super slowly with me - sit quietly, use a soft voice, and don’t rush or force interactions; that’s how I learn you’re safe. I was pretty shut down when I arrived, but with calm, gentle care I do warm up and show my sweet side. I can be a flight risk when I’m afraid, so secure doors, a leash, and lots of patience are important while I find my courage. / Energy Level: 4-6. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I'm a student in the Mostly Mutts University training program and am working with my trainer on building trust. / I’m doing well in my crate at Mostly Mutts. / I didn’t get the chance to learn good potty habits when I was younger, so I’ll need your patience and guidance as I figure it out. Please be gentle with me and know that there will be accidents, but with kindness and consistency, I believe I can learn. • LIKES/DISLIKES: Once I get to know and trust you, I really enjoy having my neck rubbed - it feels so nice! I enjoy spending time in the Mostly Mutts play yard (much more than going for walks), where I can relax and explore (I even jumped into a lap when we were in the play yard). I think I’d do best in a calm, quiet home without too many people coming and going. / I do not like being rushed or picked up if I’m not comfortable with you. Please read all the above information to ensure we’ll be a good match. I’m sure I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention, exercise, and training once I’m all settled in my new home. • MEDICAL: I'm current on annual vaccinations, micro-chipped and neutered. If you have the patience of a saint and a gentle heart, I think we could be a great match! My adoption fee is $299.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
