h another dog friend (already adopted) and I’m so happy to be here getting lots of love and needed medical care while I wait for my forever home (see medical below). I’m in a wonderful foster home now, waiting for my furever family to find me! • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I came in with a dog that I liked and have met other dogs that were about my size at Mostly Mutts and though I wasn’t ready to play with them, I also did not show any aggression. I spent a week in a home with another nice dog, and we coexisted well together, and I like the low-key female chihuahua in my current foster home, so if you have a nice dog at home that’s not looking for a playmate, let’s meet! / I ignore the cats in my foster home and don’t mind if they approach me. All cats are different, so I’m not sure how I would be with another cat. / I like the gentle 7-year-old boy in my foster home and even like to snuggle with him, so let’s meet and best no very young kids since I’m an older gal. · PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I’m a super sweet little lady who just wants the simple things in life – people to spend my time with, soft fluffy blankets to burrow into and a cozy, squishy bed to relax in. My foster says I’m not the average 12-year-old girl and really need some exercise (1-2 miles) every day to be my best self. I whine a bit asking for my walk, walk perfectly on my leash and haven’t had any reactions to anyone we pass. I really enjoy a routine and now that I have adjusted to my foster family’s pattern, I am really thriving. I’m calm unless left alone, friendly, and absolutely adore being with people. I settle in quickly and love to keep my favorite humans close, so a stay-at-home or work-from-home family with a consistent schedule would be perfect for me! I do tend to bark pretty loudly when I’m left alone (but my foster says I’m not a barky dog in general) so I’m not the best fit for apartment or condo living – but in the right home, I’ll be your loving, loyal little companion and I’ll make sure you always know you are loved. My foster says I am a “SUPER sweet and very chill dog who just wants to hang out with her people (and she makes friends with everyone very easily).” / My energy level is 2-4. · SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I know the ‘sit’ command and walk nicely on a leash - I’m sure I can learn more if you would like to teach me. / I’m not a big fan of being in a crate separated from my people and can be loud in it. In one of my temporary foster homes, I did like resting in it with the door open. / My foster says that my potty habits are good - I sleep through the night and that I let her know every few hours during the day that I need to go outside and have not had any accidents in their home – yay me! · LIKES/DISLIKES: I love going outside for my daily walks and despite my age, I have the stamina to walk briskly for a few miles – nothing beats breathing in the cool, crisp air! I’m a big fan of snuggling up together afterward. Beef liver dog treats are yummy, and honestly, just being with people makes me the happiest little pup around. I like to follow my people around (my foster says “not annoyingly so” lol) and enjoy routine. I also enjoy car rides so you can take me places with you! / In addition to not being a fan of being alone much, loud noises startle me. I’m also sure I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention, and training. · MEDICAL: I'm current on annual vaccinations, micro-chipped and spayed. I’m taking an anxiety medication to help with shelter stress and it’s very possible that I’ll be able to come off this gradually as I settle into my new home. My foster says this is very likely as I’ve already made so much progress settling in with them. I came in with severe dental disease, and thankfully I’ve just had a good dental cleaning as well as 2 warts removed from my face. I’ve got a grade 3/6 heart murmur that does not require medication at this time and may improve now that I’ve had a good dental cleaning. I am looking for a wonderful home where I will be a cherished family member! My adoption fee is $100.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
