Saturday, Sacramento - Pet Food Express 3rd Saturday, Modesto - Strand Hardware Store 4th Saturday, Roseville - Pet Food Express Please visit the GCGSR Rescue Page for specific address information. All of our dogs are in foster homes and not in one single kennel location. Adoption events is the best way to meet several of our dogs at once. Adoption Fee: $300.00 Spyro is a striking 5-6 yo Black and Cream male weighing 75 pounds. He reentered our program after his original adoption 2 years ago by a family who recently found themselves unable to provide him the care he needs. Since that time, he remains steadfast with an affectionate gentle soul and easy going attitude. Spyro is accustomed to being in the company of many other large dogs and will avoid conflict to keep the peace. He will share in play for brief periods, but then chooses to be indoors with his human companions. This guy lights up to go on car adventures where he will wait quietly while you run your errands. Daily walks are another highlight where his strength to move forward shines through. This is well-managed with corrections and the appropriate collar to keep him in pace with his people. Along the way, he does well ignoring many common neighborhood distractions. In the home, Spyro has very respectful house manners. His favorite activity seems to be laying close to his human. He makes little demands for attention, but will occasionally approach for a quiet hello, gentle pets, or even a belly rub where he seems to basque in calm contentment. Toys and treats are not that appealing to him, but he will occasionally chew on a Nyla bone (for a few minutes, then he’s done). This boy is accustomed to being alone. However, he may choose to jump a fence to search for his people. Secure containment is necessary until he learns the household schedule and routine. Spyro is housebroken, accustomed to using a dog door, and enters his crate at night where he sleeps quietly. He would prefer sleeping on the bed by your side, and he is hoping for a forever home that might consider this. If not, this guy will be filled with quiet appreciation simply to be in your presence. Small pets and cats unknown. Level 2 Understanding Dog Levels Please be sure you understand what a dog of this Level requires. Go to our home page for an explanation of the Dog Rating Levels. ( gcgsr/doglevels/) Additional Adoption Information For more information and to see when this dog will be attending an Adoption Day, please see our Dogs page on our main website. (.gcgsr/adopt_info.html) We operate within a reasonable driving distance from the Greater Sacramento area, the Central Valley down to Merced, and Lake Tahoe. A reasonable driving distance is determined by where one of our volunteers is willing to drive within our areas of service. That means we don't adopt out of our area, to Southern California, or out of state. Puppy Requirements We have special Requirements for Adopting a Puppy and a separate Puppy Questionnaire that must be completed on puppies. Please see our Requirements for Adopting a Puppy (.gcgsr/puppies.html) email us at infogcgsr for more information. Thank you for visiting!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
