around the house, but always up for a walk or a game of fetch when you are. Frank is fully housebroken and an excellent free-roam dog. He sleeps wherever he’s comfy and has zero issues with chewing or accidents. He’s not a fan of crates and will try to break out—so he’s best left uncrated, where he does beautifully. Just don’t leave food or treats unattended—Frank has a curious streak! With low to moderate energy, Frank would do well in a home with a small yard—or even no yard—as long as he gets regular walks. He’s strong and very trainable, though he could use a bit of leash-manner polishing and recall training because he will bolt out the door if given the opportunity. He’s non-reactive to other dogs on walks and isn’t an attention hog. He gets excited about car rides (maybe a little too excited!) and needs to be secured so he doesn’t hop seat-to-seat. He is also not afraid of thunder or loud noises. Frank is wonderfully people-friendly, kid-friendly, dog-friendly, cat-friendly, and even chicken-friendly. He does not have a prey drive—just casual curiosity about squirrels or cats. Around kids, he’s incredibly gentle and aware of his size, happily letting little ones pet him and following “his kids” around to keep an eye on them. He doesn’t bark much, except when he wants a drink from the water hose—his personal favorite “game.” Frank is great for baths, ear cleaning, and grooming. Nail trims aren’t his favorite and he dislikes being restrained, but he’s manageable. Veterinary visits are generally fine, except blood draws, where he becomes hilariously dramatic (think: melting into the floor). Frank is not destructive with toys and is gentle, even with small dogs. He might paw at counters if excited but he is not a true counter-surfer. He will sneak onto the couch or bed if given the chance. He doesn’t mind changes in routine and is curious about stairs. Frank is best suited for a home that allows free-roam instead of crating, offers regular walks and occasional opportunities to run, appreciates a dog who is affectionate yet independent, has kids, other pets, or a quiet adult household—he fits all lifestyles and is patient with training and mindful of door boundaries. If you’re looking for a gentle, loyal, kid-friendly companion who loves being part of the family without demanding constant attention, Frank is your guy. He’s ready to join a home that will appreciate his laid-back personality, goofy quirks, and steady companionship. Interested in making Frank a part of your family? Contact your adoption coordinator. If you do not yet have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at .freedomgermanshepherdrescue. Frank is being fostered in Charleston, SC.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
