t terrier, yet has thicker hair like that of a cattle dog, or retriever. She weighs about 20 lbs, is fully vetted, house-trained, and ready to settle into her next and final forever home. Lucy also comes with an abundance of toys, clothing, and other items which were passed along from her prior owner. Lucy’s story is one of resilience. She spent the first few years of her life in what’s believed to have been a hoarding situation with subpar living conditions before being rescued by a kind owner who gave her four wonderful years of love and security. Now, through no fault of her own, she finds herself in foster care waiting for someone new to give her the stability she deserves. Despite all she’s been through, Lucy’s ability to trust and bond is remarkable. She connected with her foster family within a day and quickly became loyal, affectionate, and eager to please. Her favorite things in life are simple pleasures such as curling up in a warm blanket, burrowing under the covers at bedtime, and perching on the back of a couch like a little cat to survey her kingdom. She loves being pet and scratched, and if you find the right spot, she'll display a smile of appreciation. If you stop, however, she'll gently reach her paw out to pull your hand back close to remind you that she's not done receiving pets or scratches. Lucy has an easygoing energy level. She’s calm and content lounging around the house, but when invited to play, she’ll happily run around and play chase. She’s the perfect mix of cozy companion and playful spirit. A few things to know: Lucy does have a “nervous bark” when meeting new people or hearing unfamiliar sounds at home. It’s her way of processing excitement and nerves. With a calm introduction, she settles very quickly (warming up to new people within a minute or less). For that reason, Lucy would do best in a single-family home rather than an apartment or townhouse, where shared walls might trigger her to bark at noises she hears. She does wonderfully with children and loves spending time with her foster family’s kids. She’s kennel-trained, potty-trained, and comfortable being left alone for reasonable periods during the day. While reasonable in a kennel at night, it would be her dream come true to be welcomed to sleep under the blankets with you. Lucy is a loving, loyal, and gentle companion who just wants to be near her people. She’s truly a “10 out of 10” dog in every way except for her nervous bark, which just makes her a little more honest about her feelings. If you’re looking for a sweet, affectionate, and snuggly dog who will quickly become your shadow, Lucy might just be the one for you. Interested in adopting this lovable animal? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
