Tubby is a soft-hearted, sweet, 2-year-old Shar-Pei whose entire life changed on October 16th. On that day, his previous owner relinquished him into the care of one individual—not a rescue—who could not bring him home but was determined to get him the medical care and safety he had long been denied. Tubby spent years living on a front porch with painful skin issues, chronic ear infections, and eyelids that constantly rubbed his corneas. Despite that hardship, he remained gentle, quiet, and hopeful. The day he was surrendered, Tubby received a full veterinary exam at the clinic where his sponsor works, and the next morning he was neutered. On November 4th, he underwent corrective surgeries to widen his nostrils and tack his eye folds so his eyelashes no longer scratch his corneas. Thanks to this care—funded entirely by his sponsor—Tubby is finally comfortable. His skin is healing, his ears are healthy, and his vision and breathing have improved dramatically. Because his sponsor cannot house him, Tubby has been staying in temporary foster situations between Asheville and Raleigh/Cary. He has done beautifully in these homes, including one with two children and a lively household. This sweet boy is ready for stability, love, and a permanent family of his own. Tubby is rediscovering the world with fresh eyes and a curious nose. He loves sunshine, new scents, car rides, and being included in family activities. He is affectionate without being clingy—just as happy cuddling as he is relaxing nearby while you work. Tubby is house-trained, well-mannered, and easy to live with. He does not chew things, dig, get into trash, or jump on people. He rides well in the car and enjoys the company of calm, respectful dogs. He’s even gentle with puppies. Better yet, Tubby handles a bit of household activity with ease. He does not need a perfectly quiet home—only patient people who give him time to build trust and confidence. He has some visual limitations, but he moves around with enthusiasm, and his improved vision plus his excellent sense of smell make every day an adventure. Tubby would love a home that enjoys both outings and quiet time. Walks, sniffing trails, exploring new places, or simply hanging out with his people are all his favorite things. He can live with kids 10+ who understand boundaries and could enjoy a sweet, relaxed dog companion. Cats are not a fit for him. He thrives on a chicken-free diet and appreciates consistency. He takes treats gently and prefers ceramic or clear bowls. Because of his past, feeding him separately from other pets is best practice. Tubby occasionally pulls on the leash when he catches an exciting scent, so an adopter willing to continue his leash-manners training would be ideal. To ensure he transitions smoothly and stays connected to the support he may need during his adjustment, Tubby is available only in the Asheville area or the Raleigh/Cary area. Tubby is brave, forgiving, and so ready for his fresh start. If you’re looking for a soulful companion who blossoms with love and enjoys being part of family life, Tubby might be your perfect match. All Mountain Pet Rescue (Asheville) animals are up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered and micro-chipped before adoption. Contact the foster parent or Mountain Pet Rescue at petsmpravl for more information. Please note that visual breed identification of companion animals has been proven to be unreliable, so for most of our animals we provide a best guess at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our animals as an individual and do our best to describe and place pets based on personality not breed label. Mountain Pet Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit tax deductible charity (EIN 82-3039637) located in Asheville, NC.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
