s personality. He is only 5 months and currently weighs about 45 pounds. He will be in the large size range (60+ pounds) when fully grown. Buddy Bear had a rough start to life. He was found abandoned, tied to a fence at an apartment complex. His jovial spirit immediately caught the eyes of the first rescue, but that transport fell through, and finally he ended up at his second shelter. And now he is with us. Three times, a charm! He is the epitome of a happy lab. He gets along well with the other dogs and is comfortable with the kids. It is not known if he has ever met a cat. Labs are known for their friendliness towards people. They have more than enough affection to go around for the whole family, too. Labs are intelligent and good-natured. They have plenty of energy as pups and usually like to stay active throughout their lives. They make great family companions. As a mix he will probably have a lot of these lab qualities. Buddy Bear will need an owner who has had experience and/or knowledge working with puppies. Using the right guidance with consistency, repetition, and patience, will help him with the skills he needs to master. Cheerful praise and lots of treats will go a long way in helping him master those skills. It will take time and energy, but the result will be worth it. Since we do not know what kind of training Buddy Bear has had, it would be best to start at the beginning with house, crate, and leash training. He, like most pups will be a quick learner once routines are established. Daily short walks (under thirty minutes) will be a good opportunity to work on leash skills as well as socialization skills. It will be a new world to him with all the new sights, smells, sounds, and people along his walk. Please note: He may not be a running companion until at least age one when his growth plate closes. Buddy Bear will also appreciate free time in the back yard to burn off puppy energy. Keeping his mind active with activities that provide physical and mental stimulation will prevent boredom. He will want to be with a family that will give lots of affection and attention to him. In return, he will give his love and devotion. Are you willing to commit to the time and energy needed to raise this puppy so that he can reach his full potential of being a loving, devoted companion? If yes, read on. * When considering adoption, keep in mind that dogs thrive on structure and routine. They adjust much better when their owners are committed to providing consistency and stability. The adoption fee for Buddy Bear is $500. That includes the cost of spaying/neutering, up to date vaccinations, foster care, rescue and transportation fees. To get the ball rolling, head over to our Adoption Application and submit your application today. A Dog Star representative will contact you within 24 hours. To speed up the process, contact your vet and give them permission to speak with us. If you do not get a response within 24 hours, check your spam folder.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
