d. She wasn’t abused. She wasn’t forgotten. Lucy lost her home because the person she loved, her companion, her steady presence, her comfort, had to transition into assisted living. And she couldn’t go with him. Lucy didn’t understand the paperwork or the jargon or the heartbreaking necessity behind it. All she knew was that her person held her close had to leave… and then she watched him walk away, his voice soft and full of love, but his heart breaking all the same. Now Lucy is here with us, confused and grieving, trying to figure out why the world suddenly feels bigger and louder and so much emptier. This senior Shiba Inu mix is gentle, loyal, and wonderfully quirky. She loves apples, vanilla ice cream, and coconut oil. She gets so excited for car rides that she practically dances, and she enjoys her baths and water time like they’re her own little spa days. She knows “go to bed,” “sit,” “down,” “come,” and she’s kennel trained and housetrained. Lucy does best with other dogs as long as mealtime is supervised, and she’s never lived with kids, so an adult-only home will help her feel safe. She’s a puller on walks because she’s eager to explore, and she must always be leashed or in a securely fenced yard since she’s known to dart off if given the chance. Even though she is 10, she does not let it show. She is still has the energy of a pup. But the thing that stands out the most isn’t her silly antics or her love for car rides. It’s her quiet loyalty. The way she looks at you when she’s sad or unsure. The way she searches faces as if hoping to recognize the one she lost. The way she sits close when she’s upset, needing the reassurance that someone still cares. Lucy didn’t lose her home because of anything she did. Life simply forced her and her beloved person down different paths. Now she waits for a new heart to bond with. A new routine. A new safe place to land. If you believe in giving second chances to the souls who deserve them most… Lucy is waiting for you. You may find me on our website under "ADOPT

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
