ogs, please see HERE Age: 8 yrs (as of 11/13/25) Weight: 48 lbs. (as of 11/13/25) This dog has been spayed/neutered, is up to date on shots, on heartworm preventative and is microchipped. Meet Max Hip, a wonderfully patient, laid back, even-tempered older gentleman with all the qualities that make for an ideal house guest; in fact, his current foster family comprises two adults, three small children under eight years old, five dogs, and three cats! Needless to say, he can handle just about anything. Max is cool and calm, very well-behaved, affectionate, and a bit lazy but always happy to play with humans and other dogs (he'll be polite to cats but would prefer they leave him alone). He especially loves tug-of-war and bitey-mouth, so can be a feisty playmate when he gets riled up. Overall, however, he tends to be independent and keep to himself, so if you're looking for more of a chill vibe, Max just might be your guy. He's excellent in the car and perfectly fine in a crate, but he'll need some gentle corrections to stop jumping up on guests and/or furniture, As a senior dog, he's prone to ailments more than the younger pups, of course. He recently had a mass removed from his hind leg (and the incision is healing beautifully), and he's missing some of his teeth so prefers softer food and treats. Max has also developed cataracts, which have reduced his vision somewhat, so it might take him a bit longer to adjust and feel confident in his new home. He's tolerant of small children, but doesn't love too many sloppy kisses from them, so your little ones should be good with setting boundaries. Max is a beautiful little baby with an older dog's soul! Max and his sister Rosie Hip (see separate listing) were house dogs to an ailing elderly couple who had extended periods of immobility and have now passed away, so they'll need a little extra attention while they acclimate to new homes. They're available either individually or as a pair. Max is waiting to meet you! Medical Note: This dog has tested positive for exposure to ehrlichia. This does not mean that this dog had/has an active infection of ehrlichiosis, only that the dog was exposed or infected in the past. This dog is/has been asymptomatic while in SOS care and is being treated/has been treated preventatively with a 28-day course of doxycycline. This dog is ready for adoption, though may continue to test positive for exposure to ehrlichia for some time. Please see here for more information on ehrlichia, and please check with your vet before you apply to adopt this dog if you have any questions or concerns about this medical history. An adoption donation is required for each adoption; please see HERE for more information about this. To apply for this dog, fill out an adoption application on our website: Adoption Application - SOS Animal Rescue League in Rhode Island (sosarl) **Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
