, a warm brown undercoat, and a loyal disposition. She weighs about 70 pounds and is very loving to the people that she knows and trusts. Luna is a gentle soul who bonds closely with her family. She has been around four children for the last year and a half and has always been patient, loving, and well-mannered with them. While she enjoys being near people, Luna would thrive in a quieter household. Sudden noises, such as doorbells, knocking, doors closing loudly, or quick unexpected movements startle her, causing her to sometimes bark, whine, or pace. A calm environment would help her feel much more at ease and confident. Luna has a strong training foundation and is an easy dog to live with day-to-day. Luna is fully potty trained, maintains a consistent daily routine, including regular morning and evening meals, knows basic commands, prefers furniture over a dog bed or the floor, is very loyal and eager to please and will bark loudly and/or for a prolong period of time to get your attention or to let you know that something is up. She responds best to gentle guidance, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Over the past year, Luna has picked up a habit of counter-surfing when food is left out. This behavior is manageable and already improving, but she will benefit from continued structure and supervision while she relearns boundaries. Luna loves to play fetch but may or may not bring the ball back to you. She also loves car rides. Luna does well with dogs, especially those that are calm, social, and already used to being around other dogs. She enjoys companionship and does well with dogs who have steady, predictable energy. Luna does not do well with cats because she becomes overly fixated on them, and will bark and chase them until they hide. Luna would thrive with: a quiet or moderately calm home, a family or individual who can provide structure and reassurance, continued training support - especially with reactivity to loud noises and counter surfing, no cats, a calm - or no - canine companion, a home with a yard with a, at least, 4 foot high fence so she can run and play, a home where she is not crated for long periods of time and someone who values loyalty, affection, and a dog who bonds deeply. Luna is a loving, devoted dog who wants nothing more than a peaceful, patient home where she can feel safe and continue to grow. She has so much heart to give and will be an incredible companion to the right person or family. Interested in adding Luna to your family? Contact your adoption coordinator. If you do not yet have an adoption coordinator, please complete an adoption application at .freedomgermanshepherdrescue. Luna is being fostered outside of Raleigh, NC.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
