PTING THE FIRST STEP IS TO FILL OUT AN ADOPTION APPLICATION ON OUR WEBSITE AT: .caninecastaways/adoption-application IF A PET IS LISTED THEN THEY ARE AVAILABLE - WE KEEP OUR LISTINGS UP TO DATE AND REMOVE AS SOON AS ADOPTED. NAME: Ana BREED: terrier mix SEX: female COLOR: white/brown AGE: 7 yrs as of Jan 2026 WEIGHT: 11.8 lbs FOSTERED BY: LOCATED IN: NOTES FROM FOSTER FAMILY: Meet Ana! Ana is a 7-year-old, 11-pound Chihuahua mix with a heart that's every bit as big as her personality. This little lady has quite a story. After a traumatic accident caused one of her eyes to pop out of its socket, quick action helped save not only her eye but also her vision. Today, Ana is thriving and doesn't let her past slow her down one bit. Ana is the definition of a dog who knows her worth. She isn't interested in becoming best friends with everyone she meets. Trust is something that must be earned, and Ana prefers to decide when you're worthy of her affection. But once youve made it into her inner circle, youll discover a loyal companion who enjoys sharing lifes adventures with her favorite people. She absolutely loves treats, enjoys going for walks, and adapted easily to a new potty routine in her foster home. Ana also has a special fondness for cats and would be happy to share her home with a feline friend. When it comes to other dogs, Ana is selective. Very selective. Shes a bit of a bossy girl and only chooses to play with dogs that meet her approval. Because of this, she would likely be happiest as an only dog or in a home with a very easygoing canine companion who respects her boundaries. Ana isnt looking for just any home. Shes looking for the right home. One that understands that the best relationships arent rushed and that some of lifes greatest rewards come from earning the trust of a dog who chooses to love you. If youre patient, understanding, and appreciate a dog with a little sass and a lot of heart, Ana may be the perfect match. NOTE: Local applications are given first priority and some out of town areas will not be able to be processed. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
