eker in the best way and will happily lean in or forget his size when asking for pets. He’s fully house trained and kennel trained, and his crate is his safe space—he sleeps there peacefully every night. Outside, he loves having room to move and will happily gallop around a fenced yard, nose to the ground and ears alert, putting his pointer instincts to good use while keeping an eye on the local squirrels. His energy level is moderate and well balanced. Everest enjoys activity and playtime, but he also knows how to settle and relax once his needs are met. One of his funniest quirks is his love for rolling onto his back and dramatically “playing dead,” and when mealtime is near, he makes sure you know—he’s highly food motivated and starts drooling in anticipation. Everest can be selective with other dogs, but with thoughtful introductions he can build strong bonds. He currently lives with a bull terrier mix, and their relationship is incredibly sweet. He does best with confident, calm, well-socialized dogs who can act as mentor types and help guide him. While he may thrive in a single-dog home, he could live with another compatible dog under the right circumstances. Small dogs, cats, and other small animals are not a good fit for him, as they trigger his prey drive. He’s done well with kids, particularly older children who are calmer and more predictable. Because he likes to paw for attention and doesn’t always realize how big he is, a home without babies or toddlers would be safest. With adults and strangers, Everest is generally unfazed—he’s neutral on walks and in the house, though he may bark at unfamiliar people passing by when he’s outside. He’s equally comfortable with men and women, with a slight preference for the ladies. Everest walks on leash and continues to improve with each outing, though he may pull a bit or zigzag when excited. He rides well in the car and enjoys going along for adventures. He has worn a muzzle briefly without issue, and while he’s not fully muzzle trained, it would likely be an easy transition if ever needed. Loud or unpredictable noises like knocking or heavy footsteps can make him uneasy, so a calmer household suits him best. Medically, Everest has a few cosmetic quirks that make him uniquely him—worn and missing bottom teeth, skin tags, hair loss on his elbows, and a few other imperfections that don’t slow him down or affect his quality of life. He does best on a fish-based diet and may not tolerate chicken or beef well. None of his physical traits impact his ability to love deeply and live comfortably. Everest would do best in a relaxed, consistent home with a fenced yard where he can run freely and safely. He’s not a dog-park kind of guy and prefers predictable routines and familiar faces. He can be crated or left out when his people are away, as long as tempting “toy-like” items are put away. He may come with an unknown past and a few extra considerations, but with patience, understanding, and love, Everest is an incredibly rewarding companion who’s ready to finally settle into a home of his own. ========================= To apply to adopt me, please fill out the application form! form.jotform/51994996709176 . 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
