more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Wanted: Adventure Buddy, Snack Enthusiast & Professional Sidekick Meet Riley. Some dogs are couch potatoes. Riley is more of a “grab your keys, we’re going somewhere” kind of guy. Born in late 2024, Riley has spent nearly his entire life in foster care waiting for someone to finally choose him. He’s watched other dogs leave for their forever homes while he’s stayed behind, still hoping his people are out there somewhere. The good news? Riley hasn’t let that dim his spirit one bit. He still wakes up every day ready for his next great adventure. And trust us, life with Riley feels like an adventure movie in the best possible way. This handsome young shepherd mix is curious, playful, smart, and always ready to explore the world with his humans. Hiking trail? He’s in. Neighborhood walk? Absolutely. Backyard zoomies? Olympic-level performance. Riley runs like the wind and would thrive with an active family who wants a loyal companion by their side for all of life’s journeys, whether that’s mountain trails or late-night ice cream runs. But here’s the best part: no matter how exciting the adventure gets, Riley always wants to stay close to his people. He’s brave enough to explore, but sweet enough to constantly check back in for reassurance, pets, and probably snacks. Riley is already crate trained, potty trained, and impressively smart for such a young pup. He knows commands like: Sit Gentle Crate up Inside Outside …and he’s currently working on “stay,” which is admittedly difficult when you’re this excited about life. He’s also extremely treat motivated, which means training him is less “hard work” and more “tiny edible business transaction.” Riley gets along wonderfully with other dogs. He’d love a playful canine companion but would also be happy simply having humans who love him forever. What Riley truly needs now is a home where he can finally unpack his little suitcase of hopes and stop being “the foster dog.” He’s done waiting patiently on the sidelines. He’s ready to be someone’s best friend, copilot, hiking partner, couch buddy, and beloved family member. Virginia Beach, VA If you’re looking for a smart, loving young dog who’s ready to take on the world with you, Riley is packed and ready for departure. Apply today through Southeast German Shepherd Rescue. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
