eight: 56lbs Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd/lab mix Current Status: Available for Adoption in DC Area Good with: Other dogs! Raybans has also lived with cats. He hasn't lived with kids to our knowledge. We are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Special Adoption Considerations: Because Raybans is shy, he needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog who will show him the ropes. About Me This sweet boy has the gentlest soul around and the best personality! While he may take a little time to warm up to new people, once you earn his trust, you’ll have the most loyal best friend by your side. Raybans thrives with another confident pup in the home to help show him the ropes, and he’s done wonderfully living with dogs of all sizes — from tiny Chihuahuas to 80lb playmates! He’s also lived successfully with cats. This goofy boy loves walks, dog parks, doggy daycare adventures, and stretching out in his signature sploot pose whenever he gets comfy. But his favorite part of the day? Hearing you come home from work so he can greet you with tail wags, happy snuggles, and all the love he’s been saving up while you were gone. Watching Raybans gain confidence, come out of his shell, and grow into the amazing dog he is becoming is one of the most rewarding experiences. Behind his shy beginnings is a dog with SO much love to give and a heart full of devotion. All he wants is a cozy home, a canine buddy, and a person to call his own. Maybe your couch — and your heart — have been saving a spot just for Raybans. Raybans' favorite things: Other dogs! He LOVES to play at the dog park & doggy daycare Nylabones & squeaky toys Sniffy walks, especially on nature trails Tasty snacks (especially cheese, freeze dried liver, & bacon) What makes Raybans happy? Raybans is happiest spending his time with his people and his furry siblings! He is happy to have a mix of play and cuddles, especially if he gets good scratchies! Raybans is still learning... That meeting new people doesn't have to be scary (I like when people approach me slowly and give me time to adjust, P.S. it helps if you bring yummy treats, the stinkier the better!). Personality I am very shy at first but once I am comfortable I am extremely playful, goofy, gentle, and cuddly. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, and spay/neuter.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
