h MAD began in May 2025—almost a full year ago. He was surrendered to Animal Control with a broken knee, a damaged heart, and a stifled spirit. Thanks to a staff member who saw something special in him, he got his second chance. Since then he’s been with a couple fosters (through no fault of his) and had knee surgery. Since October, he has been in recovery mode with his current foster and boy, has he come a long way….we’re talking cross-country long way. Over the last year, we’ve gotten to know Luke and want to share what we’ve learned. He LOOOOOVES the outdoors….unless of course it’s raining, he hates the rain. He hates it so much that he’s been known to have an accident in his crate rather than face the falling death drops. Other than that, he’s good about going outside and alerting when he needs to use the restroom. Because of whatever happened to him before us, he needs slow intros. Translation: intros must be done at his pace, especially when it’s a transition. He has shown some reactivity to new people. He’s not aggressive, just afraid. That said, he’s getting much better. He’s a Romeo of sorts so good with female dogs. He does not like excessive licking of his face (can you blame him?). We’re not sure of males, but we think he’d be ok with non-dominant males. Cats…not a deal breaker, but we recommend not. He would require supervision with cats. Sometimes he ignores them, sometimes he just wants to chase…he never tries tasting the cat (I mean, who wants to eat kitty litter?); it’s usually just a small chase that can be redirected. With training and commitment, he could live with peaceably with cats. Luke walks well on lead, rarely pulls, and takes medication easily. He knows sit, down, and loose leash walking. We’ve been working on implied stays and stronger recall. He’s come miles and miles from where he was, but he’s not quite 100%. You know that smell, the one that makes them deaf, recall once he’s got a whiff of that is what we’re still working on. He has a goofy personality that’s sure to win a family over (just take a look at some of his pictures!). No kids or people he might find it difficult to read. Luke does not like the unpredictability and activity that comes with children, so for his safety and theirs we are firm on adult only homes (18+) This means no grandkids coming every weekend or neighbor kids that hang out. He’s curmudgeonly like that, but trust us, it is part of his charm. He’s not destructive when he’s left out but don’t forget he’s a dog and leave some tasty treat out. That is sure to find its way to the bottom of his belly. Luke’s ideal home is a person/couple/small family that will be patient with him. That will let him build the relationship at his pace. A family that will understand he’s had a traumatic past and it will take time to rebuild his trust in people, a trust that they didn’t break. He needs a family that will love him like he’s the only dog in the world, and is their world; one that will show him what love looks like and that the world isn’t a bad place (though don’t plan on changing his mind about the rain!). If you think you’re that soft landing spot that will be dedicated to rebuilding trust and giving him the best life, please email infomadrescueinc or apply for him at .madrescuinc. All MAD dogs come with a Fi Collar and 6 month subscription. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
