with the name George. But we already had too many Georges (seriously, it’s a thing), so we gave him a fancy new name for adoption purposes to help him stand out. And while the name may be different, the dog underneath is still 100% George: loyal, loving, sensitive, and just a little bit goofy in the best possible way. George is about 5 years old and weighs around 25 pounds. George is such a unique guy that his foster parents actually did a doggie DNA test! Based on his unique looks, it was no surprise when they learned his most prevalent breed was.....SUPERMUTT! Check the photo of his breed results to see the rest his breeds. . George gets along beautifully with other dogs — he’s currently living with five, and it’s nothing but wagging tails and shared toys. He doesn’t guard food or toys, and he’s not a barker (unless he sees something that is really interesting, and then you’ll get a litte woof here and there. George is house-trained, crate-trained, and sleeps soundly through the night — either snuggled next to your bed or curled up right beside you, if you’re the “dogs on the bed” type. He’s also amazing in the car — calm, quiet, and happy to be along for the ride. As a matter of fact he LOVES it and accompanies his foster dad to dunkin donuts where he gets a couple little treats if he's a good boy (and he's always a good boy!) George walks nicely on leash and loves his toys, but what really sets George apart is his heart. He can be shy in new situations — the kind of dog who freezes or gently steps back when he’s unsure — but he doesn’t panic. He just needs a moment. And when you give him that moment, something beautiful happens: he leans into you with full trust. And once you earn George’s trust, you’ll never walk alone again. George doesn’t absolutely *need* another dog in the home, but he really really excels and thrives in a pack, so if you're looking to add another to your own pack, this might be the guy for you. George is ready to find his person. The one who sees past the name and into the kind, quirky, deeply loving dog behind it. If that sounds like you, apply at .northstarpets — and don’t forget to mention George (aka Carolyn's Nickels … it’s complicated, but he’s worth it).

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
