d Belgian Malinois/Tervuren mix (best guess), and she’s the kind of dog who’s always ready for the next adventure—but she’s equally content hanging out with her person afterward. Don’t let the distinguished sugar muzzle fool you. She’s still got plenty of gas left in the tank. She has high prey drive, high food drive, and just enough energy to keep life fun without making it exhausting. A game of fetch, 15 minutes on the slat mill, a hike through the woods, or an afternoon exploring town? She’s all in. Then she’s perfectly happy to settle down and relax with you. Calusa is an incredibly confident, affectionate dog who genuinely enjoys working with her handler. She’s cooperative during grooming and handling, loves to cuddle, and has a wonderful off switch that can be surprisingly hard to find in working breeds. Even better, she’s easy to live with. Calusa is fully crate trained, potty trained, and exceptionally clean in her kennel. She settles quietly, keeps her crate tidy, and understands that downtime is part of the routine. Training is already well underway. She understands several German commands, including sit, down, and stand. Her recall is excellent, and she’s been taught that hearing her name means to immediately make eye contact with her handler. She’s currently polishing her formal heel for crowded environments, but she already walks beautifully in a flat heel on a pinch collar. She’s also e-collar trained and happily wears her collar, responding beautifully on very low levels. The e-collar isn’t there because she needs heavy corrections—it’s simply another communication tool she’s already learned to understand. Like many confident working dogs, Calusa does have some possessive tendencies with valued items. She responds very well to structured trades and exchanges, but because of this, we do not recommend placement in a home with children. She would thrive with an active single adult or couple looking for a loyal adventure partner. Due to her prey drive, she is not recommended for homes with cats or other small animals. While she’s done well calling off outdoor cats during training, living with indoor cats would likely create unnecessary conflict. She has not yet been formally dog tested. Nothing about her demeanor suggests she couldn’t do well with another stable dog, but introductions should be thoughtful, particularly because of her possession tendencies. She is not dog reactive though! If you’re looking for a dog that’s equally happy hitting the trail, training, playing fetch, or curling up beside you at the end of the day, Calusa checks a lot of boxes. She already has the manners, the training foundation, and the confidence. All she’s missing is someone to share it with. She’s not looking for just any home. She’s looking for her person. All MAD dogs come with a Fi Collar and 6 month subscription. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
