been told 4 years and 7 years...we hope to have a better idea on that once the pair gets to the vet clinic to be all checked over and to get all of their needed vetting, incluidng neuter surgery for Leo. They are both good with other dogs and formerly lived cats. Leo is deaf. He is in need of a foster home once all of his vetting is completed. 4/13 UPDATE FROM LEO'S FOSTER MOM: Leo, who's estimated to be around 4 years old is a deaf white boxer. Since he's been in his foster home he has learned many signs, come, go, stay, sit, no, go for a walk, eat, love. Sometimes the Foster mom forgets that he's even deaf. He does live with another dog, Lady, who he takes some cues from. He loves people and very sweet but not in your face. Although, he has some guarding issues, where he's very protective of his foster mom but we're working on that and it's improved tremendously. He has no known medical issues although his breathing seems obstructed at times, it appears that he wheezes although it doesn't seem to affect his sleeping, running or playing. He plays with toys in the house, he loves to pick up a toy and run and or chase it when thrown. He's great on the leash, fabulous on walks, does not pull, he will heel right next to you. And he stops when you stop to cross the street. He has only been crated once, and is not a fan of it but he is great loose in. He has access to the house both upstairs and down but when he is left alone he will just lay by the window on his dog bed looking out waiting for you to pull back in the drive. He has been left for up to 5 hours several times. Even when there were Christmas decorations at Christmas trees he never bothered with them. Leo is totally potty trained, we'll go to the back door and stand and if no one responds he will paw at the door to go out. He will bark at delivery trucks when they go down the street and busses but when corrected he'll stop, although, when he's alone with his foster dad in foster mom is out he doesn't bark at anything. He is pretty much a velcro boy, he wants to follow you everywhere and if he's laying down sleeping and you leave the room he gets up anxiously looking to see where you are. I think being deaf plays a big part in that because he can't hear you leaving the room.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
