NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Freedom and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (Feb. 8th) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Rockville (5154 Nicholson Ln, Kensington, MD 20895)! Name: Freedom Best Guess for Breed: Wheaten terrier mix Best Guess for Age: 5 years as of October 2025 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 25 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: DC area foster home Watch this video of Freedom showing off his silly side! See more videos of Freedom on Instagram: .instagram/helping_ryes_cousins Special adoption considerations: Freedom had a subcutaneous mast cell tumor successfully removed in November 2025 and is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments to prevent the cancer from returning. As of 2/4/26 he is halfway through his treatments, which include one vet visit, every other week. These treatments haven’t slowed Freedom down at all; he’s still enjoying his usual snuggles, walks, healthy appetite, and eagerness to play, with very minimal side effects. These treatments are generously sponsored by the 15/10 Foundation and the sponsorship will transfer with him if adopted. His adopter will need to commit to completing his treatment plan. We’re happy to discuss his medical history and treatment details with interested adopters. Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think Freedom would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure he can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes. About Freedom: Freedom is a deeply affectionate, people-loving dog who thrives on connection, routine, and adventure—and when the day winds down, he’s happiest curled up next to you on the couch. Household Manners Freedom has excellent house manners and is a dream indoors: No accidents in the house Crate trained and sleeps quietly through the night in a crate in the bedroom Does best with a consistent daily routine Personality Freedom is equal parts cuddle bug and playful athlete: Very affectionate and loves to snuggle Friendly and approachable—he’s done great with dogs, people, and children at adoption events Active and playful; he’d love an active household or a playful dog friend Enjoys long walks, fetch, and outdoor fun (with dog park visits after chemo) He is easily redirected to chew only on his toys, and he continues to perfect his leash walking skills. Addressing Separation Anxiety Freedom’s separation anxiety is currently managed with: Two structured 30+ minute walks daily High-value chews when left alone Minimal Trazodone as needed His anxiety mainly shows up as vocalization, so he might not be a good fit for apartments or condos where barking could impact neighbors. With patience, gradual alone-time training, and continued structure, he has great potential to keep improving. Freedom is a loving, loyal dog who wants nothing more than to be close to his people. With the right home, he’ll repay your patience and care with endless affection, joyful energy, and unwavering companionship. Freedom’s separation anxiety has steadily improved over time. After just a few weeks of settling into our routine and using the management techniques, he’s made significant progress. It’s clear that with patience and consistency, he can continue building his confidence when he’s on his own. What My Foster Says About Me: Freedom is a lovable boy with a heart full of affection! This sweet boy absolutely adores his people and is always ready to show his loyalty with tail wags and cuddles. Freedom thrives on companionship and is looking for an adopter who can help him work through his separation anxiety. With patience, understanding, and some consistent training, Freedom will flourish into the perfect, devoted companion. He’s ready to bond deeply with his new family and bring endless joy to their lives—he just needs a little extra support to feel confident when left alone. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
