ever family! SALMA NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Salma Best Guess for Breed: Lab mix Best Guess for Age: 7 months as of January 2026 SEX: Female Estimated Weight: 20lbs as of 1/2/26 - she is still growing! Gets Along With: Other dogs! Salma’s foster has observed her around kids, dogs, and cats, and she seems to do very well with them all. She has not lived with cats or kids, though - we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters. Currently Living at: DC area foster home Salma is Looking For: Hiya! I'm Salma! I'm looking for a home that will let me play with toys and get my puppy zoomies out and give me snuggles in between playtimes. I can't wait to explore my new neighborhood on lots of walks, and I'd really like to make a bunch of doggie friends along the way. Oh, and I should probably take a puppy obedience class or two so I can show you how smart I am. What do you say? Do you have room in your heart for me? What My Foster Says About Me: Salma is an active pup. She gets short bursts of energy and loves playing with toys and running around outside. Once she is tired out, she is a big fan of napping and cuddling. Salma is working to perfect basic commands. She is very treat motivated so is eager to learn quickly. Salma has been doing wonderfully with potty training. She usually whines when she needs to go outside, but if not she sniffs around more than usual. Take this as another sign to let her outside for a potty break. We are working on crate training! Salma does not mind getting bathed or going on car rides. She takes medicine easily with a bit of peanut butter. She is good with other dogs who share her same energy. She does not bark or chase my cats but she may get too close for comfort and is respectful when they let her know when enough is enough - she loses interest and wanders off. There have been a handful of times that she was nose to nose with one of my cats and she just sat there and stared. Salma has also been great with the kids she has met. Salma is sweet, loyal, playful, intelligent, snuggly, and such a good girl. She deserves the best forever family! Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460 which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
