A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Peter Best Guess for Breed: Retriever and hound mix Best Guess for Age: 1 year as of January 2026 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 35 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! He also lived with a two year old child while in foster care in Puerto Rico. We haven't seen him with cats but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special adoption considerations: Because Peter is shy, he needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog who will show him the ropes. Special adoption considerations: Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think he would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure he can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes. Peter is Looking For: Peter is a sato - a dog from Puerto Rico. He's eager to get his own humans in the DC area - he's a young boy and has so much to see and do. Long sniffy walks, romps with pup pals, and all the adventures his new family can dream up - yes, please! Dog school would be great, too, so he can show how super smart he is. Most of all, though, he wants to know he's safe and under his own roof for all his days. In exchange, he promises to always put a smile on your face - and to give so much love and loyalty. What do you say? Is Peter the one you see by your side? What My Foster Says About Me: Peter is coming along well! He loves other dogs and loves to play and has finally started approaching people. He asks for affection and has become quite the cuddle bug. He is working on potty training and is doing quite well. He enjoys his walks in the neighborhood but is still adjusting to busy roads with lots of noise and traffic. He does well in his crate and he also can be trusted in the family, only playing with dog toys (no shoes or cords have been harmed). He is a sweet shy boy just waiting for a sibling to keep showing him the ropes. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog . 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
