er when her family of 12 years had to move and could not take her with them. Mimi is a senior 12 year old Chihuahua with lots of life to live and love to give. She is still spunky enjoys short walks around the block and is good with other dogs and cats. Mimi is housetrained and independent about going outside to do her business. Mimi is doing very well in her foster home where she loves to roam the fenced yard and gets along well with the 2 other dogs in the house. She has a crate in her foster home so she can have her own space away from the other dogs, but the crate is not necessary once she has her forever home. Since she is a Chihuahua, Mimi does become attached to ‘her person’ and will want to be by your side and on your lap the moment you sit down. She may be shy at first and timid around new people but will warm up especially for the person who is caring for her. Her favorite thing to do is snuggle with her person while watching a movie. If you are looking for a loving little companion and are able to give Mimi a comfortable home in her senior years, then she is the dog for you! Mimi has been seen by an ophthalmologist for cataracts. The lens in her right eye has a mature cataract and a luxated lens but is not painful. Her left eye has a cataract also. Mimi is very good about getting her eye drops (2 different drops to keep her comfortable and to keep her condition from progressing). She will need to be on these eyedrops for life and will need an annual visit with the eye doctor. The eye drops are a prescription at CVS or any other local drugstore and are about $20 per month. Mimi’s bloodwork at intake looked good and her heart is strong and healthy. Mimi is doing well on a Farmer’s Dog type of diet. Adoption fee is reduced due to her eye care expenses ($200). If you are the family Mimi is looking for, please fill out an adoption application at panimals. Excellent vet references are a must. References and home visit required for all of our pups.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
