back, I was very shut down and scared - very different from how I was before. I take some time to warm up to new people, so I was very stressed at the shelter. I am now in a foster home and doing great there. I am learning to feel safe and work through some of my fear of new people, especially men. I am looking for someone who will be patient and trust that I will blossom once I really get to know you. • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I would like to be your only dog, as I tend to guard my person from other dogs in a home setting. However, I can enjoy walks or even a day trip alongside another dog, as long as they’re respectful and not looking for playtime - I’m just not a fan of the “paws in my face” kind of play. / Cats unknown. / Mostly Mutts recommends calmer kids 15 and older due to my fear challenges with new people, so let’s meet. • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: My whole body wags with joy when I get to spend time with the volunteers that I’m comfortable with. I do have “stranger danger” challenges at first, mainly with men, but once I really trust you, man or woman, I will crawl in your lap because I think I am a lap dog! Until I trust you, reaching over my head or grabbing at me, or grabbing my collar scares me, so a snap is my way of warning. Please give me time to come to you and don’t rush me. I was labeled high energy from my previous home, but my foster family says I am the perfect housemate. / My energy level is 4-6. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I'm in the Mostly Mutts University training program and have already mastered the ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘come’, ‘leave it’ and ‘drop it’ commands and I look forward to learning more. Let's continue my training together with the free lifetime training classes that Mostly Mutts offers for all their adopted dogs! / My crate manners are good. / My potty manners have been good at Mostly Mutts and wonderful in my foster home. • LIKES/DISLIKES: I like to be with people that I trust - my favorite thing is sitting in your lap once I trust you. I like treats and tennis balls, and I’d benefit from a fenced yard in my new home as I don’t like strangers. After some playing, I love to snuggle up to my people and relax. I also love car rides, and I sit quietly in the back seat! / I am looking for someone or a couple that doesn’t like to have company. But if someone does come over, I am happy to go to my kennel so you can visit, and I don’t have to be a part of it. • MEDICAL: I'm current on vaccinations, micro-chipped and spayed. I’ve started a medication called Fluoxetine and Xanax to help with the stress and anxiety of being rehomed. Once I have settled into my new home, I should be able to be weaned from both meds. For now, I feel it’s helping me, so just ask how it’s going. I am looking for a great home with someone who wants to help me continue to trust. I really do want it!! My adoption fee is $299.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
