s humans—where you go, he wants to be right there with you. During the day he’ll plant himself at your feet, patiently waiting for pets, and at night he’s happiest snuggled up as close as you’ll allow. His love language is definitely physical closeness, and he gives it freely. While people are his top priority, he also enjoys other dogs and is playful, goofy, and eager to initiate a game once he’s comfortable. Emmett isn’t a full Great Dane and sits around 100 pounds, roughly the size of a large Lab. He has a gentle mouth that suggests some retriever in his mix, and it shows in how careful and sweet he is with toys, treats, and people. His energy level is moderate—he enjoys playtime and engagement but is also very capable of settling down and relaxing with his person. One of his cutest habits is carrying a stuffed toy around the house like it’s very important business. He can also be wonderfully silly when he’s feeling safe and happy, and he has a habit of resting his head in your lap and gazing up at you with total devotion. Emmett is housetrained, walks well on leash, and does not bark, which is a rare and lovely trait. He’s great with children of all ages and is gentle even when kids are a bit clumsy with their affection. He loves adults and strangers too—there’s no warm-up period with Emmett, he’s friendly from the start. He currently lives with two Great Danes and does very well playing with a male dog who matches his playful style and social cues. He’s more neutral with a female dog in the home, with no serious issues but some mild tension around food. With the right introductions and management, he could do well with another dog, especially one that enjoys play but respects space. Emmett does have some important needs to be aware of. He struggles significantly with being alone and panics when separated from his humans, even for short periods of time. Because of this, he is not crate tolerant and should not be crated; when left alone in a kennel, he became so distressed that he injured himself trying to escape. He will need a home where someone is with him most or all of the time, such as a work-from-home household or a retired adopter. With time and professional guidance, he may be able to build some confidence with short absences, but he will likely always be a very people-dependent dog. He can also be uncomfortable in the car and will try to climb into your lap for comfort, so car rides will require patience and management. Emmett also shows some resource guarding behaviors centered around his humans, particularly when other dogs seek attention from his person. He is not aggressive, but this is something his foster is actively working on and should continue with training and structure in his future home. Medically, Emmett is currently being treated for heartworm with Minocycline and is severely allergic to Doxycycline, which should never be given to him. The ideal home for Emmett is one where he can be near his people as much as possible and truly be part of daily life. He would thrive with someone who enjoys constant companionship and doesn’t mind a dog who wants to be involved in everything. A calm household with the option for canine companionship and plenty of human interaction would suit him beautifully. If you’re looking for a dog whose world revolves around loving you, Emmett may be the perfect match. ========================= To apply to adopt me, please fill out the application form! form.jotform/51994996709176 . 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
