og has been waiting for them since November. His name is Matrix , and we think it’s time his wait finally ends. Matrix is an approximately 2-year-old, 45-pound Heeler/Cattle Dog mix, but those numbers don't begin to tell you who this special boy really is. Matrix has pogo sticks for legs and a heart that is even bigger. When he's happy, hungry, or convinced a squirrel has violated the terms of its agreement to stay out of his yard, those legs go into action! He takes his job as head of neighborhood security very seriously and will bravely protect his home from squirrels, suspicious shadows, and any other questionable “danger.” But underneath all that Heeler silliness is one of the sweetest, most affectionate boys you could ever meet. Matrix will do just about anything for a belly rub. In fact, he has been known to stop whatever he's doing, dramatically flop onto the ground, and make it perfectly clear that your immediate attention is required. And if you sit down? Even better. Because being in your arms may just be Matrix's favorite place in the entire world. He loves deeply and wants to be close to his people. His foster family jokes that Matrix puts the HEAL in Heeler because once you're his person, he wants to be right there beside you. When you come home, Matrix doesn't just greet you—he celebrates you. You may get one of his special Matrix hugs , or he may immediately drop into his play position because seeing his favorite person is obviously an occasion worthy of a game. Matrix also loves other dogs and has a blast playing with his foster brother. The two wrestle, play tug-of-war and keep-away, and, naturally, steal each other's toys—even when there are two identical toys sitting right there. Because apparently your brother's toy is always better. This silly boy is also house trained, leash trained, and knows basic commands. He has spent many months in foster care learning what it means to feel safe, loved, and part of a family. Now he deserves something even better: A family of his very own. Matrix came into rescue after being found as a stray and never reclaimed. Since November, he has watched and waited while other dogs found their homes. And somehow, this wonderful boy is still waiting. We don't want Matrix to spend another season wondering when it will finally be his turn. He would thrive with a family who appreciates his affectionate personality, playful Heeler spirit, and incredible loyalty. He enjoys other dogs, and if you already have a pup at home, a meet and greet is encouraged to make sure they're a great match. Matrix is one of our Diamond Dogs, which means his adoption fee has been reduced to $125 simply because he has been waiting longer than he ever should have. He is neutered, microchipped, current on core vaccines, and heartworm negative. Matrix doesn't need thousands of people to choose him. He just needs one. One person to see this post and think: “There you are. I've been looking for you.” Please share Matrix. His family may be one share away. Apply to adopt Matrix through Legacy Humane Society: legacyhumanesociety/adoption-application/ We do not have a facility to house the dogs in our program. They are all kept in foster homes until they are adopted. Therefore, if you are interested in adopting from LHS, please complete an online application at legacyhumanesociety/adoptfoster/adoption-application/ and we will contact you asap about the status of your application.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
