collar. The resident, wonderfully nurturing Great Dane, two young kids, and a wise cat are lovingly watching over these little ones, offering gentle guidance as they explore their new world. Koper’s part of the litter of eight precious pups that arrived at the shelter with their loving mama, and thanks to the amazing shelter staff and their mom’s care, they thrived. Once their previous owner entrusted them to the shelter, it became our turn and joy to raise them until we find these affectionate, fun, cuddly, and brave puppies their own loving shepherd-experienced families. Their wonderful mama weaned them and has been adopted! We love keeping our young pups, like these 7-week-olds at arrival, in pairs for a few weeks—this helps them adjust more smoothly, learn how to play nicely, and practice gentle puppy manners with their siblings. Plus, the guidance from the adult dogs in their foster homes is truly priceless! Koper’s doing so great with potty training—he already prefers to go outside just like Jet! He snuggles in with Jet at night for deep slumbers. Both pups are toy lovers, playing with each other, the kids, and their Great Dane mentor with gusto. She allows Koper to nibble her ears and her muzzle before laying down the law. Both pups have terrific appetites for their kibble and are growing like weeds. They’re happy, healthy, brave, and smart —just waiting to bring joy to the perfect families! And we have turned on their adoption button to match them to their respective forever families. The black-and-tan pups of this litter are generally braver and the first to dive into new experiences. And that holds true for this pairing, too. Both received their next booster shots and were weighed at the vet during Xmas week, which may explain the littermates' differing weights. We update each pup's weight after their vet visits, and each foster family is taking the pups, based on their household schedules. We’re so grateful for everyone’s incredible response to our call for fosters! And would be absolutely thrilled if you could say yes, so we can welcome more pups from shelters overflowing with sweet shepherds in need. Have you visited our YouTube channel yet? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
