ESTLE NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Nestle and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (Jan. 25th) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Silver Spring, MD (12020 Cherry Hill Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20904)! Name: Nestle Best Guess for Breed: Lab/hound mix Best Guess for Age: 9 months as of December 2025 SEX: Male Estimated Weight: 50 lbs as of 12/9/25 (likely has some growing to do!) Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen Nestle with cats or kids yet but are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters. Currently Living at: DC area foster home Watch this video of Nestle discovering snow for the first time, and loving it! Nestle is Looking For: His forever home! This sweetie is an older puppy and he's eager to get her own humans. Long sniffy walks, romps in parks, all the adventures they can dream up - yes, please! Making pup pals along the way is on his wish list as well, along with quality kibble and a cushy dog bed. And at the end of a fun day together - cuddles. But most of all he wants to know where he belongs, to be safe and loved. In exchange, he promises adoring gazes and loyal companionship for all his days. What do you say? Is Nestle the companion you have been seeking? What My Foster Says About Me: If you’re looking for the perfect mix of puppy cuteness, respectfully southern gentleman and snuggle buddy—Nestle is the boy for you! Sweet Nestle has all the fun and sweetness of a puppy, but is much calmer and doesn’t require all the sleepless night/work of a baby! Nestle does very well in his kennel (he’ll even put himself to bed in it at night when he’s ready!), eats all his food, does really well walking on his leash and LOVES his squeaky toys. Being the southern gentleman that he is, Nestle is very gentle when playing with people and other pups (he loves giving kisses while he plays) and has been very respectful of my home. Despite spending the first months of his life in a warmer climate, Nestle absolutely LOVES the snow. He would romp outside in the snow all day if I let him. He is so easy to work with and care for—he even let me put a coat on him with no fuss! The sweet boy has made zero messes and hasn’t touched a thing not meant for him (shoes, furniture, etc.). Nestle knows sit and is working on other tricks like “down” and “paw”—this boy is very smart and food motivated so he’s picking up on cues quickly! I truly can’t say enough good things about this sweet boy. He is also the best snuggler I’ve ever met—his favorite spot is cuddled up next to you on the couch with his head in your lap as he lovingly looks up at you. His entire body shakes when he wags his tail (which is at every person and every dog he sees)—he is truly such a loving and happy boy. His perfect day would be a romp outside, followed by some treats, a nap snuggled right next to you and a bone to chew on while he watches Scooby Doo! Nestle is waiting to make you smile every day, what do you say? Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
