FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Maya and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (1/4) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Alexandria, VA (3351 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22305)! Name: Maya Best Guess for Breed: Lab mix Best Guess for Age: 11 years as of December 2025 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 50lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! Her previous human says she has enjoyed meeting older kids but she has not lived with children - we would be happy to discuss integration techniques with potential adopters. She is scared of cats and should not go to a home with cats. Currently Living at: DC area foster home All about Maya: Maya came to us all the way back in 2015 from Puerto Rico and was quickly adopted into a loving home. Her previous humans took very good care of her, and she has been very much loved. Through no fault of anyone, she now needs a new home. In the home, she's as calm as you'd expect an 11-year-old dog to be. Good in the crate when her humans crated her. A great friend who loves being around her people. She's great on leash - friendly, open, eager to meet other dogs and humans. She regularly covers about four miles each day in walks and hikes - there's plenty of pep in that step! She's gone to doggie daycare and dog parks, and enjoyed meeting pup pals there as well - she likes meeting friendly dogs who have manners. Above all, she loves her humans and wants to be with them! Maya may have a gray muzzle but everything about her is joyful and she has so much love and loyal companionship to offer. What do you say? Are you Maya's next chapter? Is she the one you see by your side? Update from DC foster: She is very sweet, loves to cuddle, does well in her crate, and is eating all her food during meal time. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $375, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog . 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
