circ;€™s County Animal shelter since December 23rd, 2025. 24Petconnect/DetailsMain/PGEO/A566017 Nutmeg has a sign on her kennel that says, “go slow with me, I’m afraid of hands reaching”. I did go slow as I fed her through the kennel and leashed her up, but I didn’t find her to be particularly timid during our interaction. She was very excited that I was there to see her and was bouncing up and down and took treats without hesitation. When I saw her exuberance, I realized that I had the perfect plan for her walk. I had just shoveled a path to the large run in the field and she was going to be the first to test it out. There was fresh snow to bounce around in and play to be had! Nutmeg enjoyed every moment of her chance to stretch her legs in the fresh snow. She ran zooms, veering close to me but never bumping in to me and then slid to a stop nearby me to get a treat before bouncing away again. It was such a joy to see, her having so much fun in the snow, she had plenty of energy to burn. Once she got her zooms in, she showed me that she could take treats gently and knew both “sit” and “wait” cues. She willingly allowed me to leash her up and showed no signs of fear during our interaction. Despite her small stature, she can jump very high when she’s excited and though she mostly jumped up in front of me and not on me, she might be a bit too energetic for a family with very small kids. Nutmeg has attended the shelter’s playgroup on multiple occasions and was in the gentle dainty grouping of dogs. The playgroup attendee described her behavior in that group as “semi steerable with gentle dainty play style. Also displayed push and pull play style with certain dogs”. After our walk and play sesh, Nutmeg willingly returned to her kennel and seemed as if she’d appreciated the chance to get out and was more relaxed. She had no issues with me taking off her leash and closing her kennel door. I think that Nutmeg is appropriately named, because she is a little spicy in that she has a good amount of energy and will do best with a family committed to walking and playing with her but she’s a SWEET spice. To foster or adopt Nutmeg, please visit her at the: Prince George’s County Animal Shelter 3750 Brown Station Rd Upper Marlboro, MD Tues-Fri 11am-7pm, Sat 10am-4pm Closed Sunday and Monday for adoption

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
