Please note: Ruka is not at the shelter. This is a courtesy post to help the owner find a safe and appropriate placement. All inquiries should be directed to the owner, not Yolo County Animal Services. Meet Ruka, a 10-year-old female American Pit Bull who is in urgent need of a calm, adult-only home with no other animals. Ruka has been a beloved family companion for many years, but recent behavioral changes mean her current home is no longer a safe or appropriate environment for her. About Ruka Breed: American Pit Bull Age: 10 years (senior) Color: Brown and white Gender: Female Spayed: Yes Vaccines: Not current Potty Trained: Yes Crate Trained: Yes Living Situation: Indoors and outdoors Behavior & Important Notes (Please Read Carefully) Ruka has historically been described as mild-mannered and friendly with people. However, recent incidents have raised serious safety concerns: Dog Aggression: Ruka recently went after a small dog while off-leash and did not respond to recall commands. Cat Aggression: She has begun showing aggression toward cats for the first time. Leash Reactivity: On leash, she becomes extremely hyper and reactive toward both dogs and children, pulling hard and vocalizing. Visitors: Becomes overly excited and is difficult to calm. Handling: Allows people to take food and toys without issue. Because of these behaviors, Ruka must be the only pet in the home and should not live with cats, dogs, or other animals. While she has been friendly with children in the past, her owners are understandably concerned about safety around young children and do not feel a home with kids is appropriate. Ideal Home Ruka needs: A quiet, structured home No other animals No young children An experienced dog owner, ideally familiar with large, strong, reactive dogs Someone willing to provide patience, management, and possibly professional behavioral support Reason for Rehoming Ruka’s owners have exhausted all personal and rescue-based rehoming options and are heartbroken to be making this decision. With a toddler in the home and recent behavioral escalation toward animals, they are prioritizing safety while hoping to find Ruka a compassionate final home where she can live out her senior years peacefully. Located in: West Sacramento, CA Contact: Amir Rejaian — (530) 401-8235 Email: redwagon9outlook Ruka is a senior dog who deserves dignity, honesty, and the right match — not a risky one. Please share only with individuals who understand her needs and limitations. All animals are up-to-date on vaccinations (including rabies if over 4 months old), microchipped, and spayed or neutered. All dogs have been been vaccinated with DHPP and Bordatella (kennel cough) and heartworm tested negative (if over 6 months). All cats have been vaccinated with FVRCP and current on flea control. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
