to rest—often kenneling himself or curling up on a soft pillow (or a willing human) when he’s tired. This smart pup does great with an open-feeding setup and happily shares a food bowl with resident dogs without issue. He grazes when he’s hungry and shows excellent manners around mealtime, never begging and instead lounging politely nearby. He’s food-motivated and loves treats (especially carrots!), though cucumbers are a definite pass. Turnip is crate-trained at night and has had zero accidents in his kennel. With a consistent routine, he does a “last call” potty around 11 p.m. and comfortably holds it until morning. When he wakes up, he entertains himself with squeaky toys or happily gnaws on his favorite chews. He’s a quiet, easy presence in the home—so much so you might forget he’s there until you hear the happy squeak of a toy. Turnip self-entertains beautifully, respects when other dogs are done playing, and is wonderfully gentle and respectful with cats. He’s already learned household routines, navigates stairs with ease, and has picked up commands like “outside,” “leave it,” and “last call” in just a few days. Affectionate, smart, calm, and well-mannered, Turnip is a truly special puppy who will seamlessly fit into his future home—and make it feel complete. This pup was rescued from a high kill shelter in Texas. Meet and greets are by appointment only. An approved application is required to schedule a meeting. Check out our events page for upcoming open adoption events! We have no additional back story or update for this dog at this time. When we do, it will be updated here. This is all the information we have currently. Approved Applicants may make the adoption fee payment by clicking donate above. Partial adoption fees will not hold a dog. If upon meeting the dog of your choosing at your scheduled pickup time you find that you aren't a good match, your deposit will be fully refunded. Adoption fees include vaccines up until time of adoption, microchip, spay/neuter and 1st 30 days of free pet insurance. We are not affiliated with MetLife pet insurance. (you have to sign up for the insurance or it will not go into effect). Adoption fees help cover the medical care of the animals while he or she waits for a new home, as well as food and transportation costs. These fees help to provide care for the other animals in the shelter or rescue group who may have medical bills that are much higher than any possible adoption fee. The money also acts as a donation to help support the organization as a whole, allowing the group to continue its efforts to rescue and rehome pets. The dogs in our care are fostered in Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico. While all dogs are picked up during our scheduled times, sometimes transport dates change due to unforeseen circumstances. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
