etheart once she knows you’re safe. She is quite the explorer but at her own pace—she’s the kind of dog who starts out observing from across the room… then slowly scoots closer… and before you know it, she’s chosen a spot near you (or on the couch) and giving little happy dances! Juneau did not grow up in a home and needed time to learn what it meant to live safely indoors with people. Now, she understands household routines, knows “go outside,” and has settled with increasing confidence. She likes having choices between cozy resting spots, like her crate, dog beds, or a shady place nearby, always keeping her trusted human within sight. She only uses her crate when she chooses to retreat. She is also generally quiet except for a few moments of her alto husky singing voice. She has had lots of fun living with adult dogs after decompressing, but she is not a good match for puppies or pushy playmates. She has very clear boundaries when playing, so all she needs is humans who understand her. Cats are still a question mark—she’s ignored calm cats before, but proper introductions would be necessary. With humans, she is gentle but needs people to go slow, so she cannot live with young children. Her favorite things include peaceful walks, exploring new smells, rolling in the snow or digging outside, and lounging in shady, cozy spots. She loves lead and longline walks and jogs in nature and around the neighborhood. For toys, she loves squeaky balls, antlers, bully sticks, and occasionally likes a tennis ball, but no stuffy toys in case she ingests them. She thrives with exercise and can jump, so a secure 4-6 foot fence is required. Juneau is tired of surviving and is ready to thrive, and she's looking for a patient and loving family to settle into. In return, you'll have the most beautiful and loyal friend in the world! If you are interested in this dog, fill out an application at this link to get the ball rolling - pethavenmn/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/ The adoption fee is $450. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
