Hello, My name is Mr. Humphrey and I am a gentleman ready for a home! SSPCA rescued me in April and changed the course of my life. I was scared and confused and alone in the world. I didn't make any noise at all and didn’t trust anyone. One day I was in a pen with another dog just watching the people. This lady, in a big chair that rolls, came up and started talking to me. She took me for a walk, and I was so good she decided to take me home. At first, I feared everything, but she was calm and let me decide to trust her when I was ready. 5 months later: I now have both the AKC Canine Good Citizen and the AKC Urban Canine Good Citizen Certification! The trainer says I would be a great Emotional Support Dog and is willing to complete that training for free here in San Antonio. Now it is time to meet my forever home with all these great new skills to share! I have learned so much! I walk on a leash like the gentleman I am. I know how to sit, drop, stand, stay, wait, and many other things. I am patient and calm when we are putting on my leash and I never jump on people. I know how to move around wheelchairs and canes and learned how to stand on the footrest so it is easier to pet me. I love to go for walks and see the world. I like to look out the window when we go on trips. I am learning to play with toys and to trust no one is going to hurt me. The lady says I am super smart and now that I know how, the best sofa cuddler. I would like to be in a home where I can have a soft bed, that is my safe space. I sometimes just want to look at you and know I'm safe near you. I like to shake hands with new people, but it will take a bit of time to trust them. While I don’t mind other dogs, I don’t really want to play with them. It would be great to have a home where the other dog is calm or just being the only dog. I think cats are fun to chase, so the lady says I shouldn't live with them. I would do best in a home that doesn’t have small children. It's important you know, the vet says I have cow-hocked rear limbs which cause a short stride. Sometimes I’m in pain, however, it is managed with medicine when my limp gives me away. My new family will have to ensure to manage this for me. I’m not great at jumping up on things but am happy to have help. I do have all my shots, microch ip and am of course neutered. Mr Humphrey is around 3 yrs old and weighs 55#. His adoption fee is $200 and an online application can be completed at .texasgreatdane. - IMPORTANT INFORMATION - SASPCA Homeward Bound Dog Rescue and San Antonio Great Dane Rescue are 501(c)(3) foster-based rescue groups based in San Antonio, Texas. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
