Winnie is a beautiful young shepherd with a big brain and an even bigger heart. True to her breed, she is alert, thoughtful, and independent, but incredibly loving with her people. She’s extremely smart and picks up new commands and routines with ease. Winnie can be a bit cautious when faced with new situations or strangers, but once she knows you, she’s friendly, protective, and happiest staying close by your side. With her “guardian” shepherd instincts, she’ll be your quiet, watchful companion, keeping you company as you go about your day. She’s happy lying on the floor, hanging on the couch, or snoozing in the bed. She’s a little big to be a “lap dog,” but she does love to cuddle with her humans! And - like all shepherds - she can be talkative when she wants your attention. She’s wonderfully well-trained and has exceptional house manners. She’s respectful of boundaries, thrives with structure, and follows the household rhythm like a pro. Winnie listens exceptionally well to a calm, confident leader and doesn’t beg, rush her food, or cause a fuss. She sits calmly by during dinner and movie time. She’s also 100% potty trained, is not food- or toy- aggressive, sleeps through the night, and is as low-maintenance as they come. With her short coat, grooming is a breeze, and she even stands patiently for baths and nail trims (especially if peanut butter is involved!). Winnie needs regular exercise and mental stimulation. She enjoys daily walks but does best with a harness since she generally strolls nicely on a leash unless a deer or squirrel catches her eye! She enjoys tug-of-war, chewing on toys, and walks in the park. She is good with children and lives with a cat who shares both her bed and water bowl. When it comes to other dogs, she’s a bit of a wild card — she’s barky and reactive on leash, but off leash she has approached other dogs calmly and not aggressively. She would ideally prefer to be an only dog, but could certainly share her humans with the "right" canine companion. If you’re looking for a smart and loving dog to be your sidekick, Winnie might just be your perfect match!. Her intelligence, loyalty, and independent spirit make her an incredibly rewarding companion. At around 50 pounds, she’s the perfect mid-size dog — not too big, not too small, but just right for someone looking for a devoted best friend. EVERY DOG HAS A STORY : Winnie and her puppies were found as strays. BFPA was happy to admit them. All her cute puppies have been adopter. So now it is her turn to find her fur- ever home. Some of the information contained in this biography includes approximations based on our expertise and is not guaranteed. Applicants should live no further than one hour from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care prior to adoptions being finalized. Our foster guardians deliver dogs to their new homes for adoption trials and we do home visits to finalize all adoptions. We therefore prefer applicants that live within an hours drive of Cary NC. For the perfect home, we would consider a little further away. INTERESTED IN ADOPTING WINNIE? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
