found her confidence—especially once she met the resident dogs. Having canine friends by her side brings out her happiest, most relaxed self, and she truly thrives when she can play, cuddle, or even mischievously “pick on” her dog buddies. Sydney is a smart cookie! She’s already crate-trained and will head into her crate on her own when she sees her people getting ready to leave. With a quick treat to seal the deal, she’s usually snoozing peacefully within minutes. She’s also doing wonderfully with potty training and will let you know she needs to go out by standing at the door or giving a little cry. While Sydney is still building trust with people, she’s making steady progress. She doesn’t love being picked up, and leash time can feel a bit scary for her right now, but with patience and gentle guidance, her confidence continues to grow. When she pants, it looks just like a big smile, and her dramatic “plop” or sploot onto the floor is guaranteed to make you grin. She also has a funny, random howl she uses purely to demand attention—never for doorbells or outside noises—just for laughs and love. Playtime is Sydney’s favorite part of the day. She plays rough and rowdy, even with large dogs, and doesn’t let size slow her down. She loves to chew, with elk antlers being her top-choice toy. Relaxing, however, is not yet her strong suit—Sydney is all puppy energy and would much rather stay busy than settle down. That said, she does enjoy snuggling in bed and being close to her people, even if she’s usually ready for her next adventure. Sydney is a bright, playful puppy who will do best in a home that understands her need for patience, confidence-building, and—most importantly—dog friends to share her world with. Sydney is from a local reservation. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. We cannot guarantee the breed or size they will be full grown.* If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can donate to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
