doesn’t have the classic Malinois look that catches everyone’s eye—but Aelin promises she can love you every bit as much as one who does. Aelin has been in foster care since birth and has been with her current foster since May. That means we’ve had the opportunity to really get to know this girl, and underneath her slightly different packaging is a super smart, sweet, affectionate dog who loves to learn and absolutely adores her people. Aelin is an active girl who is always ready to go, but one of her best qualities is her off switch. She can enjoy training, playing, or going for a pack walk and then settle down when the activity is over. She is house trained, crate trained, sleeps through the night, and has good manners around the house. She also loves going for car rides and is happy to tag along for an adventure. Training with Aelin is FUN. She already knows sit, down, stay, leave it, and out and is learning to play dead. She is very food and toy motivated with strong handler focus, giving her plenty of potential for someone who enjoys continuing to train and work with their dog. Her foster has specifically worked on teaching her an “out” command with food and toys and recommends continuing that approach rather than forcibly taking items from her. Dogs are a big YES for Aelin. She lives with other dogs and is social, playful, and respectful with them. She can play hard with the pack and then turn around and settle right back down. A home with another dog could be a great fit for her. And cats? Also YES! Aelin lives with cats, is curious about them, and wants to play. For someone looking for a Malinois-type dog who already has experience sharing a home with feline friends, that is a pretty special box to be able to check. With people she knows, Aelin is affectionate, goofy, playful, adventurous, and deeply connected to her humans. With strangers, she can initially be shy and nervous. She does best when new people don't force the interaction and allow her to warm up on her own terms. Give her that opportunity, and you get to see the loving girl her foster knows. Aelin has spent her entire life waiting for the family that will finally be hers. Her mom got her chance. Her siblings got theirs. Now we want nothing more than to see Aelin get hers, too. To help make that happen, Aelin's adoption fee has been discounted. Her forever family is out there—we know it is. They may just need to look beyond the traditional Malinois exterior to see the incredible dog waiting underneath. All MAD dogs come with a Fi Collar and six month subscription. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
