ay… this girl was READY. The moment she stepped out of her kennel, all that pent-up energy came bursting out in the form of leash-grabbing, happy vocalizations, and zoomies in the yard. Potty break? Maybe later. First, we run. She’s an affectionate, people-loving dog who immediately melted into her handlers—rubbing along their legs, chatting away, and making sure everyone knew she was thrilled to be included. Loading into the car? She was all enthusiasm and slightly less coordination, needing a moment to get her back end on board—but her eagerness made up for any lack of grace. On the trail, Talia was a social butterfly. Bikes, strollers, skateboards, passing hikers—she handled it all beautifully. When people chose to say hello, she greeted them with soft, friendly energy and happily soaked up the attention. She truly enjoys being part of the action. Now, let’s talk about her muscles. Talia is STRONG. She pulls extremely hard on leash and absolutely powers forward when she’s excited. She’s not trying to be difficult—she’s just enthusiastic and athletic and hasn’t quite mastered the art of “strolling.” She will need continued leash training and a physically strong, confident handler who can safely manage her strength while helping her learn better walking manners. If you’ve been thinking about canceling your gym membership… Talia may have other plans. Other dogs are very exciting for her and Talia has had some negative interactions with dogs in the past. While she stayed quiet on the trail, she became intensely focused when passing them and wasn’t interested in treats in those moments. Though she has lived with dogs previously, we think it may be better if she's an only-pup moving forward. She’ll need continued support and management around canine distractions. The best part? After her initial excitement, she settled into the rhythm of the walk and truly enjoyed the adventure—especially when given a little extra freedom on a long line in quiet areas. She’s a dog who thrives when she has space to move and a person to share it with. Talia is affectionate, adventurous, and full of life. She’s looking for an active home that understands she’s a strong, high-energy girl who will need guidance, consistency, and someone sturdy at the other end of the leash. In return, she’ll give you enthusiasm, loyalty, and a whole lot of fun. If you’re ready for a workout partner with a big heart, Talia just might be your girl.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
