o she’ll do best with durable options that can keep up with her. One of her cutest habits is carrying around her stuffed teddy bear like a prized possession. It’s hard not to smile watching her parade it around. She’s a smart pup with solid training foundations. Spirit knows “come,” “sit,” “down,” “kennel,” and “bed,” and she’s very food motivated, which makes continued training fun and rewarding. She walks beautifully on leash and heels nicely, making her a great companion for daily strolls. She does get excited when she sees other dogs and would happily wag her way over to say hello. Spirit is still working on her potty training. She’s improving with encouragement and does well using training pads. She keeps her kennel clean but doesn’t consistently hold it in the house yet and may have accidents, even after walks, so she’ll need continued structure and patience as she masters this skill. She gets along well with other dogs and has shown friendly body language, including lots of tail wags. She would absolutely love to chase squirrels and rabbits if given the chance, so a secure yard or attentive leash handling will be important. Spirit has been around older kids (youngest is 14) and does tend to jump up when excited, so a home with older children would be the best fit. With her loving personality, playful spirit, and eagerness to learn, Spirit is ready to bring joy, cuddles, and a little bit of sass to her forever family. Spirit was rescued from a shelter in New Mexico. Meet and greets are by appointment only. An approved application is required to schedule a meeting. Check out our events page for upcoming open adoption events! We have no additional back story or update for this dog at this time. When we do, it will be updated here. This is all the information we have currently. Approved Applicants may make the adoption fee payment by clicking donate above. Partial adoption fees will not hold a dog. If upon meeting the dog of your choosing at your scheduled pickup time you find that you aren't a good match, your deposit will be fully refunded. Adoption fees include vaccines up until time of adoption, microchip, spay/neuter and 1st 30 days of free pet insurance. We are not affiliated with MetLife pet insurance. (you have to sign up for the insurance or it will not go into effect). Adoption fees help cover the medical care of the animals while he or she waits for a new home, as well as food and transportation costs. These fees help to provide care for the other animals in the shelter or rescue group who may have medical bills that are much higher than any possible adoption fee. The money also acts as a donation to help support the organization as a whole, allowing the group to continue its efforts to rescue and rehome pets. The dogs in our care are fostered in Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico. While all dogs are picked up during our scheduled times, sometimes transport dates change due to unforeseen circumstances. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
